The Australian Centre for Moving Image (ACMI) team have once again arranged a corker of a winter school holiday program to keep the kids creatively engaged over the June and July break.

From hands-on workshops to Labyrinth and Dr Seuss to Minecraft, ACMI will cover a variety of interests to children of all ages.

KIDS' FLICKS

ACMI once again presents a series of Kids' Flicks movie sessions for a reasonable $7 full price ($9 for 3D), or $5 ($7 for 3D) for ACMI Members.

Labyrinth (G)

Ahead of the highly anticipated David Bowie Is Exhibition , ACMI will screen Bowie's movie cult classic Labyrinth from June onward.



When: 20 June and 18 October.

Dr Seuss's The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T (G)

The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T is a musical fantasy film (1953), and the only feature film actually written by Dr Seuss. The story tells the tale of a ten-year-old Bart (Tommy Rettig) whose mind wanders in his piano lesson, and soon finds himself transported to a surreal world where 500 young boys must practice at his magnificent piano 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

When: 27 June to 12 July.

Spirited Away (PG Supernatural Themes)

Animated feature film Spirited Away, released in 2001, became the most successful film in Japanese history. The story sees ten-year-old Chihiro unhappy at the prospect of her family moving house. On route to their new home, Chihiro's father takes a wrong turn and soon the family finds themselves in an abandoned theme park filled with mystical creatures and ghostly apparitions.

When: 29 June to 26 July.

CREATIVE WORKSHOPS

Filmmaking

Children aged 9 to 12 will be able to make a movie in a three day hands-on workshop in which they will learn technical filmmaking skills and use their creativity. Participants will work together in a small group as well as learn the basics of writing, directing, acting and editing a short film.



When: 29 June.
Cost: Full $270, Concession $250, ACMI Member $230.

Flip It Kids

Children aged 5 to 10 will learn how to create a short animation by transforming characters into a flipbook. This is a drop-in class with no need to pre-register.

When: 29 June to 10 July between 10am and 2pm.
Cost: FREE

Crazy Claymation

This one-day workshop aimed at children aged 8 to 11 will have kids creating their own claymation movie starting with sculpting a character from clay, creating a background, developing a story, and learning the tricks and techniques of stop-motion animation.


When: 2 July
Cost: Full $120, Concession $110, ACMI Member $100.

The Massive Minecraft Movie

For Minecraft fans aged 12 to 16, this is a team based game play activity where teams work together to design a unique world with characters, then direct a scene in a Minecraft movie. The workshop involves filmmaking (open to all levels) to build a fantasy animated world, developed within a team.

When: 6 July, running from 10am to 4pm.
Cost: Full $120, Concession $110, ACMI Member $100.
