Acid Bath: When the Kite String Pops - Album Review

We're going back a few years for this one. Released in 1994 on Rotten Records (who also brought us Salt the Wound and Goatwhore), When the Kite String Pops offers up a dark slab of sludge infused metal.

Hailing from Louisiana, Acid Bath are unfortunately no longer active, having broken up in 1997.

What they've given us as listeners though, is a dark musical journey, with groove laden metal, and a few softer (but no less sinister) song's thrown in. I'll sum it up this way; When the Kite String Pops uses art by John W Gacy as cover and booklet art, and also features audio samples from such movies as Clockwork Orange. You won't find any songs here we could compare to say, Pink or Lady Gaga.

What you will find is an epic sound. Acid Bath certainly know how to layer a song, employing heavy drum beats and heavily distorted guitars. They don't vary the riff's too much, but they don't need to. Dax Riggs vocals fluctuate between clean singing and an abrasive growl, adding to the horrifyingly dark emotions present in each song. The lyrics are not for the faint of heart, as Dax shows the listener his own view of society. You have only to listen to opening track "The Blue" to see the underlying sense of violence and anger. "Cassie Eats Cockroaches" really makes you want to get up and move.



Not for the younger audience, Acid Bath's contribution to the metal/sludge genre is not to be ignored. We're lucky to have this, and their only other album "Paegan Terrorism Tactics".
