Your chance to experience authentic Ethiopian cuisine
Just west of Adelaide on Henley Beach Road you will find the Abyssinian Restaurant home of authentic and traditional Ethiopian Cuisine. I visited this restaurant with Ethiopian friends so could have no better recommendation for the authenticity and quality of the food served.
The restaurant is open seven days a week from 11 am - 10.30pm and open for lunch, dinner, take-away and catering of functions. The menu covers both meat and vegetarian dishes and you will find imported African Beer on the drinks menu along with soft drinks and wine.
Food is served traditional Ethiopian style which means everything comes with injera, the traditional Ethiopian flat bread. Our favourites from the dishes on offer were: Garrod-Garrod beef sauteed mixed with herbs; Doro Wat a traditional favourite of fresh chicken legs berbere (red chill pepper) and boiled eggs; Chirowot ground split peas cooked slowly with spices and seasoned butter. Traditionally the meal is eaten with fingers by tearing off a piece of injera then picking up some of the food. Forks are on hand for those who find this difficult, as are facilities to wash your hands afterwards if fingers are your preference.
There was not a skerrick of food left after our meal which speaks volumes for the quality and tastiness of the food. The gentle spices along with the soft and slight sourness of the injera leaves you with a very comfortable warm full feeling.
The restaurant itself is very conveniently located on Henley Beach Road just a few minutes from the city. You'll find some stunning art work on the walls and keep an eye on their website for traditional music nights held from time to time. The menu is extremely reasonably priced. There is ample parking in the nearby shops and in the neighboring streets. The manager of the restaurant is very attentive to his guests and ready to answer any questions about the menu or any other element of Ethiopian eating tradition. We enjoyed a truly delightful night out with fantastic authentic Ethiopian food.
