There are several indigenous events that are available to the public and this list is about two of them in Mandurah. As Mandurah is just a 50-minute drive from Perth, it is easily done in a day, so try these events - they are fascinating!

1. Welcome to Mandjoogoordap Dreaming
The local dialect in this area uses the word "Mandjoo", and this means a meeting place. The word "goordap means in the heart of. The word Mandjoogoordap, therefore, means a meeting place of the heart to the Noongar People.

Indeed, one of the main streets leading into Mandurah from the Freeway is Mandjoogoordap Drive. Having lived around Mandurah for years, this photo is very apt!



You can have a Mandjoogoordap Dreaming experience when you go on a tour. You will learn about cultural meanings and the many ideas and wonderful places around the area. Your host will make sure that you take home some "lasting memories" from this special place.

While on this tour, you will learn to understand the seasons, the bush and the vast and many waterways in this area. These were so important to the ancestors of these people.



You will be shown how they found their food, share in the wonderful healing properties that plants can bring, and how to look after our land. This is important as it ensures that the natural resources found here, will still be there for future generations.



This cultural knowledge was given by family who knew the land and knew how the people could benefit from it.

There were also the "Dreaming Stories" which were passed on and which you will hear about. All fascinating information! It is their belief that if they look after the land, the land will look after them, and I find this a lesson that we all need to think about in this day and age.

You will also learn all about Bushcraft from local, George Walley.



George is from the area, and to him, the bush was somewhere where children were taught the traditional ways, and this was called Bushcraft. They were taught firstly where to hunt, how to hunt and where to forage for the different types of foods. These were then cooked on the coals on a campfire, and enjoyed by all. To this day, George's family still uses these learned methods just as his ancestors did for many, many years.

When you join George on this Mandurah Dreaming Tour, you will learn this, and find out a whole lot more about this fascinating subject. Mandurah Dreamtime Tours will start from the Mandurah Performing Arts Centre.

There are several different tours you can take and this particular one is the Walking Tour. It goes for 1½ hours and is on a Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 10.30 am to 12.00 noon.

Cost is $35.00 for adults; and $15.00 for children; with a 10% discount for group bookings of 5 or more people.

2. Welcome to Dreamtime Cruise
This is, as the name implies a Dreamtime Aboriginal Heritage Cruise and is also taken by local, George Walley.



This is a unique experience and you will cruise through Mandurah's delightful and fascinating waterways.These vast waterways will provide an interesting insight into the region's rich indigenous history and culture.



George has the perfect background for teaching you about the waterways and about storytelling/Dreamtime. He is well versed, having learned his skills as a child in the area and will share this knowledge and experience with you.

Your cruise will include:

The cruise will take place on the Dancing Dolphin which has a licensed bar with many choices of beverage for purchase.

The tour is suitable for all ages, and even the children will have organised activities. You can also purchase additional snacks and guests receive a 10% discount at the gift shop, where you can buy gifts and locally made products.

Cost is $45 adult; and $25 child, Children under 3 years free, and you can make your bookings here . The tours are on from 10:30 am to 12 noon.

The next Dreamtime Cruise will be held as part of Naidoc Week and will be on Sunday 8th July at 10.30 am.
