Learn to forage for food, and turn it into meals
This is an exciting event where you will experience the world's oldest living culture through bush food tasting and demonstrations.

You will be able to join an Aboriginal guide on a unique "foodie experience" in the garden, and you will discover some amazing recipes which have been 65,000 years in the making!

You will learn to use a "coolamon", which is an Aboriginal container made of wood or bark, generally used for holding liquids or goods, or carrying a baby.

You will learn to forage in the garden and how to identify seasonal ingredients, and then be shown how to incorporate these native Australian bush foods with everyday ingredients to prepare a range of bush-food infused recipes.

This is an experience to tempt the taste buds while providing a deeper understanding of Aboriginal heritage, culture and the connection to our country.

While using this traditional coolamon you will gather seasonal foods such as:

native vegetables
native plants

These will be collected from around the Royal Botanic Garden in Sydney before learning about traditional food preparation methods, and then getting the chance to taste your very own bush food infused recipes!

This will be fascinating and is a unique opportunity in the heart of Sydney to:

Gain a deeper understanding of Aboriginal heritage and culture as well as connection to country
Use their traditional methods to gather and prepare food
Learn how to identify seasonal bush food that you see
Taste bush food-inspired recipes

The Bush Food Experience will be held on 21st April, and 19th May, 2018 from 1.00 pm to 3.00 pm.

Cost will be $72.00 per person for members and $85.00 for non-members, per person. This ticket cost includes all the food ingredients.

It will be held at The Learning Centre, and you enter via the Woolloomooloo Gate, and this experience is recommended for adults only.

It is recommended that you use public transport, as there is only limited parking available.

Important note: A minimum number of 6 people is required for this event to go ahead. If minimum numbers are not reached you will be notified 24 hours prior to your booked session, and provided with a refund within 14 days.

Fruits, vegetables, minerals and animals all come from the bush, and traditionally these were hunted and gathered in various ways.

The processes involved in picking and preparing this food is very varied, and over many thousands of years, Aboriginal people have perfected these skills and those of finding and turning these natural materials into edible foods.

There are many above ground foods that Aboriginals collect as food, and these include the fruit, nuts, seeds, stems, and fronds of different plants.

Fruit include such things as:
Lilly pillies
Bush apples and plums
The billygoat plum

Other foods collected include:
Nuts, including those of the cycad, pandanus and Macadamia variety
Seeds of acacias and various grasses
Honey ants
Wild Honey/Sugar Bag Honey
Nectars Grevillia
Witchetty grubs
Bogong Moths
Edible bush tomatoes
