I walk past this building often as I go to South Bank but this time was different. Where a bank stood with heavy doors and columns, there now stands the Aboriginal Art Co., a not-for-profit organisation focused on genuine Aboriginal handmade art. Brisbane's first Indigenous art centre.

I was drawn in by the colours and the artwork, so I walked in and I looked at what was on offer and was very impressed by it, so much so, that I bought an early Xmas present for a loved one.

While waiting for them to be wrapped, I chatted to the founders of the art centre, Amanda Hayman and Troy Casey. They are directors of this gallery and store and are looking to collaborate with independent artists and creative centres and businesses to showcase Aboriginal and Torres Island art.

They talked about their pride in forming the art centre with the help of the Arts Queensland Indigenous Fund but also a supportive group of people. You can read more about the people involved in this project by clicking here .

Their unified aim is to promote the work of Indigenous art centres around the country and independent artists.

They source authentic and ethically produced art and they take great care in finding the artwork, promoting the artists and making sure that it's a decent source of income for some who rely entirely on it. This is a unique opportunity really for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists to show and promote their art in the city.

Each artwork is carefully attributed to the artist and their story often accompanies a purchase. It is an empowering project with realisable goals and not only is it a pleasure to see, but most of you I suspect would enjoy the learning experience as well as the shopping experience.

They are just beginning. The art centre has additional projects which will unfold soon, including an artist in residence space for them to create, a lovely courtyard at the back of the old ban,k which can be used as a small and intimate meeting place, as well as what has lovingly been dubbed the Vault Gallery, a small space for exhibiting art, literally in an erstwhile bank's vault.
