The much loved and local ABC Gardeners' Market is back this Spring with its biggest event yet - you are sure to be left bug-eyed by the gardening goodies, delicious food, family fun and entertainment on offer! Regarded by thousands of local green thumbs, young and old as a gardeners' institution, it is a family event not to be missed!
Gates to the ABC studio grounds at 85 North East Road open at 8am and close at 1pm. Entry is by gold coin donation and supports the mental health charities Grow and Diamond House.
Held from 8am to 1pm, all are welcome to come along and peruse and purchase affordable plants and seedlings, plus pots, stands, tools and much more - expect around 100 stallholders! You are sure to grab some great bargains and if you need some advice, there will be a multitude of local friendly growers and associations on hand to offer handy hints and tricks.
But this wildly popular weekend family event doesn't just sell a diverse selection of plants, the kids will love the family entertainment, including the circus from 9am and face painting from 10am.
You can also join ABC Radio Adelaide's presenter Ashley Walsh broadcasting Talkback Gardening live on stage from 8:30am with gardening expert Jon Lamb, followed by popular on-air segments About the House with builder/carpenter Rose Squire at 10am and the Saturday Quiz at 10:30am. Plus you can take a behind the scenes tour of the Collinswood studios with familiar ABC faces - Sonya Feldhoff at 9:30am, David Bevan at 10:30am and Eddie Bannon at 11:30am (make sure to come early to secure your spot).
From 11am, Port Power AFL footballer Matt Lobbe and Gardening Landscaper Tom Lobbe are special guests this year to the ABC Gardeners' Market. The brothers and Mental Health Week ambassadors will take to the stage to share their personal resilience and the challenges with managing mental illness. And as gardening is good for the soul, they'll have fun demonstrating how to make an indoor kitchen herb garden terrarium – which one lucky marketgoer will win later in the day, one of many prizes you can win in the raffle.
Then just after 11:30am the bug-alicious Fringe show sensation, Post Dining with Steph Daughtry and Hannah Rohrlach will get you buzzing on a voyage into flavours of the unknown! Recently seen at the Open State Festival, you will taste treats on the fly made from a variety of insects and natural ingredients. 'Bee' warned, audience participation is required!
From 12:15pm spoil your ears with the sultry gospel sounds of the House of Songs Project direct from Austin Texas. Don't miss these very special performers, who are in Australia for the premiere screening of Brumley's Suitcase, part of the Adelaide Film Festival.
While the market is known for its huge selection of gardening goodies, there is also a delicious variety of international food on offer.
Held twice a year, the ABC Gardeners' Market has raised over $300,000 for South Australian charities since its inception over 20 years ago. All proceeds collected on Saturday 14th October will support prevention and recovery through two lived-experience community mental health charities, Grow and Diamond House SA.
Come along and spruce up your garden for a bargain, enjoy great food, fun family entertainment, kids activities and more at this year's spring edition of the ABC Gardeners' Market! There's something for everyone. Visit abc.net.au/adelaide for details.
