Abbotsford Convent is opening its doors on Sunday 9 November 2014 from 11am to 4pm to celebrate its 10th birthday as an arts, culture and learning site. Festivities on this annual Open Day will be bursting at the seams with 'live' music, performances, open artist studios, free workshops, tours, markets, exhibitions, activities for the kids and of course food and drink to enjoy. You can meet the artists in their studios, take a free tour of the site and enjoy all that is on offer and entry is FREE. CLICK HERE to download the program for the day in PDF format. You might want to come down early to not miss out on some of the workshops. There will be a few new additions this year. The Grand Imaginarium which is a story-making wonderland for children and families; The Koorie Markets which has indigenous craft and cuisine; Pay-As-You Feel Festival which is a vegetarian outdoor banquet presented by Lentil As Anything ; and a gorgeous outdoor Heritage Gardens Stage which will delight you with performances and workshops throughout the day.

Parking will no doubt be rife, so for some, travel by public transport might be more convenient. A free shuttle bus will be operating to ferry people to and from the convent and the Victoria Park train station between 11am and 4pm. I believe this is on the Hurstbridge Line. CLICK HERE for the PDF of the Melbourne Train Network.

The iconic Abbotsford Convent exists today for all to enjoy because the site was saved from development by a passionate community campaign. Open Day is also a day when an appeal is made to the community to help save the Convent. Forty percent of the site remains unrestored and the Abbotsford Convent Foundation is seeking $18 million to finish the job. To support the future of the Convent, throughout the day many roving staff members will be offering information about the project and giving you the community the opportunity to make a donation. Let's face it, if we want to keep on enjoying all that Abbotsford Convent has to offer, we need to support this cause with our donations, so please come prepared. The Convent does not receive any recurrent government funding and relies on the support from the community. CLICK HERE to read an article by the Herald Sun on the 21st of October this year in regard to restoring the Convent.

Your help is also needed on the day to form an army of Visitor Information Guides, Car Park Invigilators, Activity Helpers, Public Transport Shepherds and more. If you are friendly and have a 'can do' attitude and would love to volunteer on the day, CLICK HERE for contact details and to APPLY . Join their EVENT PAGE to keep up with updates. I'm certainly looking forward to the festivities on the day.
