Abbey Road Cafe & Gastropub

I don't get down to St Kilda as much as I'd like to, but that's because there are so many other places to explore and discover in Melbourne or even the whole of Victoria. Walking down Acland Street last week, heading for the Twilight Markets I had to stop at
Abbey Road Cafe just to soak in the atmosphere with my eyes. There's lots to take in visually. I do love how quirky and colourful
Abbey Road is and it sits well with my artistic nature. I also love that couch of theirs at the entrance that looks like it's covered in newspaper print. I don't know why I imagined the seat would be as hard as concrete to sit on, perhaps because the upholstery looks tautly tucked or perhaps the newspaper print creates an optical illusion. It reminds me of those mosaic concrete couches you find scattered along Prahran and other places and maybe that's what seduced me to think that. Believe it or not, this is the first time I sat on that couch and I was somehow surprised that it was a soft seat.
As I was heading for the Twilight Markets to enjoy dinner with my children and visiting cousins (from the UK) we didn't really order a meal here but settled for a bowl of wedges to share as we sat chatting and enjoying the ambiance of the place. The wedges were great, as was the coffee, and the girls serving us were friendly and efficient. This Cafe/Gastropub is open 7 days a week from 7am to 1am. I was told by the girls that they actually stay open for longer but their liquor licence is only till 1am. Owned and operated by a brother and sister duo they have the familiar pub offerings like 'Chicken Parma Thursdays' for $15. They also have 'live' bands on Fridays and, love it or hate it, it's Karaoke night every 2nd Thursday.
I've never been here when they open at 7am in the morning everyday so I guess it does make me wonder who wakes up at 5 or 6am thinking they'd head down to St Kilda for a meal. Perhaps their clientele are the locals and workers stopping for some breakfast before heading off to work. They certainly carry a range of breakfast drinks like Milo and milk and banana smoothies to name a few, but they also have Bloody Mary and Baileys latte under the heading of breakfast drinks. Is that like '
the hair of the dog '? There's the usual breakfast fare of toasts, porridge and muesli along with bacon and eggs and other familiar breakfast meals plus pancakes. Breakfast is served till 3pm and till 1pm on weekends. Open sandwiches, burgers, jacket potatoes, gourmet pies, pizza, pasta and salads seems to be the go for lunch with quite a good range of kids meals. Check out their
menu on their website as there's lots to sift through in main meals and desserts.
Keep an eye on their
website or
Facebook page as they run quite a few
events and specials and that way you don't miss out.
Acland Street always has a good vibe and Abbey Road Cafe just happens to be one of those visual gems embedded into the fabric of entertainment in St Kilda to enjoy. Head down there for a
squizz or to enjoy their Christmas Eve roast meal. Perhaps you'd like to dance to the DJ's tunes on New Year's eve.
