Jousting Tournaments

There's a reason why the festival's jousting tournament is so popular every year and I can understand why. Who would want to miss the hair-raising, heart-stopping action?

You'll need lots of energy to cheer for your favourite knights as they saddle up to show off their skills, talent, grace and honour in an exciting battle. And to get into the spirit of things, why not come in an awesome medieval armour or knights costume? It doesn't matter whether you make your own, hire one or borrow one, just as long as you look the part.

Kids' Medieval Fun Day

Your kids will be on school holidays just in time for Kid's Medieval Fun Day on Tuesday 8 July. So there's absolutely no excuse for missing this event!

Held on the grounds of the Abbey Museum, children between the ages of 3 and 12 can go back to the medieval times. There will be stacks of activities like stilt walking, trebuchet firing, medieval games, storytelling and so much more. Your kids will have a ball!

And to be part of the atmosphere, makes sure your little knights and princesses come in costume.

Medieval Banquet

Eat, drink and be merry!

Attend the Medieval Banquet and be dazzled by a culinary feast and medieval entertainment. Of course, to attend this event, you must play the part. If you are unfamiliar with the manners and customs expected at this prestigious event, don't worry. The Steward of the Feast will guide you throughout the evening to make sure you have it all down pat.

In addition to an authentic medieval feast and entertainment, you'll also experience a traditional ritual of using scented rosewater to wash your hands before being seated.

This year, there will be two fabulous banquets: Saturdays 28 June and 5 July. As tickets for these events sell out quickly, make sure you get organised and purchase your tickets early.

Medieval Tournament

Whatever you do, don't miss the Medieval Tournament on Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 July.

It all begins on Tournament Eve (Friday 11 July) with a Knighting Ceremony in the stunning Abbey Church at 7.30pm. Then festivities for Tournament Weekend begins at 9am on Saturday with the Grand Parade, which guarantees to be a feast for your eyes. See over 500 knights, warriors, ladies and their retainers at the parade, which promises to be a photography feast not to be missed.

Expect a huge variety of entertainment with something for everyone. There are historical fighting displays, jousting championships, medieval dance workshops, and Turkish oil wrestling. You can even try your hand at archery. In addition, there will be plenty of medieval music and bands, wonderful street performers, mouth-watering food and drinks, and over 60 market stalls.

So, are you ready for this unforgettable event? Start putting that medieval outfit together and see you on the day.

Your Comment
Budding photographers should have this brilliant event permanently etched into their calendar as it's one of the best and most varied shooting opportunities you'll have all year!

All of the participants are more than willing to pose, usually in character, for photos allowing you to walk away with some great images to showcase.
