AAT Kings trips South Australia Lake Eyre - an option to do a flight on an AAT King's tour

I've become a convert to the idea of organised small group travel since the world was knocked off its axis in the past few years.

Why Take A Coach Tour

Travel has changed. Road trips used to be fun but now there is the price of fuel to contend with. DIY bookings have become harder due to airline cancellations, delays, and surging hotel prices. And as for solo travel, my once modus operandi, I now worry about getting sick somewhere far from home and lacking support. One of the benefits of tours is that someone always has your back. And there's company. Something many of us lacked in Melbourne during the dreary days of lockdowns.

So I was pleased to attend a recent reveal of the AAT Kings 2023/24 season, introducing travel writers to the AAT Kings' latest offerings. The gist was that this well-respected and established company will take us to places we want to go while taking the stress out of travelling.

NEW Tours in South Australia

Ben Hall, CEO of AAT Kings, told us one of the biggest trends in local travel is Australians wanting to visit South Australia. "People are realising there is a lot more to this state than the famous wineries. There are also breathtaking landscapes, natural wonders, and one-of-a-kind experiences."

AAT Kings has partnered with the South Australia Tourism Commission, offering travellers savings of up to $600 per couple on selected SA tours.

Adventures include the 8-day South Australian Outback Adventure, where you can wonder at the natural amphitheatre of Wilpena Pound, see Australia's largest inland lake - Lake Eyre, now called Kati Thanda, and marvel at Coober Pedy's lunar landscapes. Sleep like the locals and stay underground.

The four-night Outback Explorer - from Uluru to Adelaide, allows visitors to soak up the spirituality of Uluru, see the dramatic white salt pan of Lake Hart fringed by Pindan, and mull over the secrets and intrigues of Woomera - a military-owned town and testing site.

On the 7-day South Australian Eyre Peninsula tour, they can be awed by the end-of-the Earth sea cliffs at the Great Australian Bight, dwarfed by the Yanerbie Sand dunes, and immersed in sensations when they taste bush tucker serenaded by didgeridoos, or eat freshly shucked oysters knee-deep in Coffin Bay.

The 5-day Adelaide to Kangaroo Island tour begins in Adelaide and then visits Kangaroo Island's rugged coastline. They cheekily call this tour Remarkable Adelaide to Kangaroo Island (KI). But the real Remarkables are a geological phenomenon on KI. As well as stunning natural attractions and famous wildlife, this is a foodies tour with Ligurian honey - beer brewed using rainwater and delightful tipples from Islander Estate Vineyard.

Further Afield

First Nations Front and Centre

With AAT, there is more than an auto-pilot acknowledgment to country offered on their tours. The company takes Maori and Indigenous Australian culture seriously. There is a strong emphasis on cultural appreciation through specialist guides and tours with locals who look after the country - its flora, fauna, and culture.

As the company states: "You can sleep soundly knowing that wherever you wander with AAT Kings, you're contributing to the protection of the destinations and communities you visit."

Your Comment
I'm with you on this one Nadine. These days I prefer organised travel instead of organising everything myself.

No worries about not being able to see some parts because you are driving.
No wear & tear on your vehicle including the risk of having to wait for new tyres if you damage any. As far as I know all their staff have Senior First Aid Certificates. A lot of small towns don't have service stations than can get spare parts for you now. Near Blinman we damaged a tyre a few years ago. The replacement was ordered by the service station (it no longer exists). It was taken to near Blinman on the train. We had to wait a few days too
