AACTA Awards - Hollywood Comes to Sydney
Do you love watching the Oscars and fantasize about walking the red carpet? Fancy a bit of mingling with the stars and getting amongst the glamorous celebrations?
Well thanks to the hard work of the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA), you now have the chance. ACCTA not only ask you to keep choosing and enjoying Aussie television and films, they want you to come along to the annual ACCTA Awards, Australia's equivalent of the U.S Academy Awards. Yes ACCTA have opened up an opportunity for everyday people like you and me to frock up and get involved in a truly star-studded industry event.
The ACCTAs, now in their fourth year, recently took place at the Star in Sydney on 30 January 2014. January /February may mark awards season in Hollywood, and it's now awards season in Sydney!
Geoffrey Rush, President of ACCTA, or "Pres" as he likes to be known, is enthusiastically promoting Aussie TV and film. His dream is to develop our culture so that local creativity is increasingly encouraged. There are heaps of quality dramas, comedies and docos made right here. In fact, Sydney itself is becoming a star of the screen, currently being showcased in shows such as Redfern Now and Wonderland. ACCTA is so keen to promote Sydney as our home to film and TV that they've partnered with Destination New South Wales. We may not have a Hollywood sign sprawled across our hills, but the harbour city is the hub of Aussie movie magic and creativity.
Indeed the view of the sparkling harbour was a highlight when I was lucky enough to attend the awards a couple weeks ago as a guest. Imagine being at the Official After Party at the Star's Terrace Bar, juggling champagne and canapés with the likes of Cate Blanchette, Claudia Karvan and Geoffrey Rush. If getting up close and personal with them on the red carpet wasn't exciting enough, here I was making chitchat and asking if I could have the last meatball.
So if the combination of walking the red carpet, attending the formal awards ceremony and hitting the official after party sounds appealing, make sure you head to the AACTA website to grab tickets for the 2015 event when they go on sale. It's guaranteed to be an extraordinary experience. For a full package this year it cost just under $300, and it's certainly worth it. Tickets to the red carpet and ceremony (without the party) were around $180. But I think you can't miss being there at the end of the night when everyone lets loose - so go for the full package.
