Walk in the Park is a fundraising and awareness raising event hosted by Parkinson's Victoria. Registration and fundraising begins early in August and the official walk will take place on Sunday 25th of August at Federation Square from 8:30am until 2:30pm. The money raised will go towards funding research initiatives, support programs, professional and community education and professional counselling for people living with Parkinson's and their families.
One of the most common neurological conditions in Australia, Parkinson's disease is a degenerative disorder with no known cure. More than 80 000 Australians are currently living with Parkinson's and 30 Australians are diagnosed every day. While it is most common among people over 60 years old, it can affect adults of any age, geography, gender or culture. The most common symptoms are movement-related such as shaking, rigidity, slowness of movement and difficulty with walking. Other symptoms might set in including sensory, sleep and emotional problems. The simplest things can become a challenge, limiting hopes and dreams.
