What is your favourite Melba's Chocolate?
Melba's Chocolates and Confectionery is one of those places that is great to visit at any time of the year, but is simply joyful at Christmas.

A Christmas tradition for my family is to visit Melba's to collect large chocolate letters which are given to family and friends as part of our cultural celebrations. Although a good 45-minute drive from our home, the visit is a highlight as stock up on our favourites and Melba's is high on our list of places to take visitors.

Melba's Chocolates was created by Graeme and Joy Foristal in 1981 and was originally located in a small wash-house behind their Adelaide Restaurant before relocating to the garage of their home and eventually to its current site at the historic Woodside Farmers Union Factory site in 1990.

As you come through the first door of Melba's, you are greeted with the amazing smell of warm chocolate reminiscent of the smell of hot chocolate being made on a cold winter's day. Go through the old-fashioned turnstile and you are greeted with rows upon rows of wonderful sweet goodness.

Melba's has an amazing range of chocolate goodies in white, milk and dark chocolate along with a variety of confectionery. Every day you can choose from animal shaped chocolate to chocolate blocks, honeycomb and everything you can think of covered in chocolate, including sheep nuts and cow pats! Chocolate ones, of course.

There is a range of no added sugar chocolate and specialty bags for when you just can't make up your mind. At Christmas, though the range expands to include chocolate Christmas trees and Santas in a range of sizes, boxes and hampers.

The best part (besides the chocolate of course) of visiting Melba's is the six rooms dedicated to production process which are open and inviting for you witness. The chocolate, depositing, packing, panning and toffee rooms and cooling tunnel are equipped with 1940's era chocolate and confectionery making equipment. While no guarantees can be made as to which product is being made at the time of your visit, staff will always be happy to discuss the process with you. Also be aware that these rooms are often not operational on weekends outside of the lead up to holidays. At the time of our visit, all rooms were operational and we were able to spend time with the staff discussing the different processes and watch what they were doing.

If the smell of all that chocolate is making you hungry, Melba's also has a Coffee Shop which is open 7 days a week from 9 am to 4.30 pm (excluding Christmas and Boxing Days). The Coffee Shop offers a wide arrange of very tempting delights such as mahalia coffee, hot chocolate, cakes and muffins for you to enjoy on site or take away.

Melba's is located at 22 Henry Street Woodside and is open 7 days a week year-round from 9 am to 4.30 pm including public holidays, except Christmas and Boxing Days. Twilight trading hours are available from 16 to 23 December 2017 from 9 am to 10 pm. During these hours the factory will be alive with activities and fun for the whole family. Melba's will be open 9 am to 4.30 pm on Christmas Eve for those last minute gifts.
