Georges Méliès is considered a pioneer of early cinema, science fiction and filming techniques. The French film director was considered an innovator of special effects. His utilisation of techniques such as substitution splices, multiple exposures, time-lapse, and hand painted colour made him one of the most important people in early science fiction film. His films are bizarre, fantastical and surreal and have stood the test of time as iconic journeys into fantasy.
As part of the Adelaide French Festival, Adelaide Festive Centre and Nexus Arts present . is the title of one of Méliès most well-known films however this event is more than just a single film. Presented at the Lion Arts Centre, will be showcasing a number of Méliès short films scored live by three ensembles of leading Adelaide musicians. Right with you in the moment these musicians will provide their own musical flavour to these classic films. Included are The Zeitgeist Orchestra (featuring Hilary Kleinig, Derek Pascoe and Chris Martin), trailblazing drummer Jarrad Payne (1.1 Immermann, The Shaolin Afronauts, voiceROM) and jazz violinist Julian Ferraretto. This is sure to provide an interesting cocktail of special effects masterpieces combined Adelaide's up and coming musical talents.
Georges Méliès popularized many of the filming techniques that would later inspire many Hollywood hits. Come and see the art of film making at its inception, where what initially were merely words on a page and ideas first became images on the silver screen.
