When I think of Mascot, I think of the airport but this thriving and often forgotten suburb south-east of our city has a lot to offer. For one special day in October, local businesses come together to provide a food and wine fair to give you A Taste of Mascot.

Now in its fourth year and due to growth, this event moves from the station area to Mascot Oval to make way for families with young children to enjoy the grassed areas and the adjacent Lionel Bowen Park.

This year, celebrity chef Fast Ed Halmagyi, best known for his role on TV's Better Homes and Gardens, will be cooking up a storm with various demos whilst giving tips and showing onlookers how to hone their skills in the kitchen.

Children will be kept busy with cooking classes just for them, along with a variety of other activities. Loads of stalls will grace the oval for all to sample local produce in addition to popular food trucks and well-known businesses being present. Different cuisines are represented from Shiso Fine Japanese to Despana Spanish tapas, and Waroeng Kacang Indonesian food to Pigout Aus American food. In the sweet department, there's Nutie Donuts, Mrs Jones' Cupcakes, Black Pantry, Croquembouche Patisserie, Coffee Belgian Waffles & Gelato, and more. Drink-wise, there's a good choice as well with Fresh Sugarcane Juice, Willie the Boatman with wine/beer/cider, LongLeaf Tea Vodka spirit drinks and Ibrahim Espresso. Non-food stalls include information on the local Wild Things Urban Wildlife Program and Travel Managers Food & Wine Tours.

Free entertainment will include live music from the Aston Martinis playing old school soul and cool jazz with a cocktail twist, Pat Capocci doing rock 'n' roll and the Hot Potato Band with their brand of pop. MC for the event is radio personality James Valentine.

From 11am-4pm, there's a lot to indulge in here so mark the date to discover what Mascot has to give.
