"Freelance writer getting in touch with the city vibe" the Fletch

So are you tired of everything in Melbourne? Well I cannot imagine anyone would say yes, because this city has so much to offer. However, just in case you want to get out and see some other part of this great state, I recommend a journey into Geelong.
So why Geelong? Simply put, it is not that far in distance, yet so different in feel. The city has a more cozy appeal than the downtown Melbourne streets. Also, you even need a car to visit. Just take a tram into Melbourne and take one of the regional Vic trains. All said and done, it only takes about fifty minutes from the train station so hop on board and go for a ride.
Once in Geelong, there are a few things to do for all you of those who live in the day. For the tourists, there is always the Geelong Gaol though if you have seen it once then you are set. For all the others not interested in this sort of behavior, there are many boutique shops around the city.
Generally speaking though, heading to the waterfront will yield more results in terms of shopping. If this sort of behavior is not for you either, then head over the waterfront area and get lost in a new place. Turn the phone off, tune out the world, and just discover all that is around you.
For all of you who choose to exist in the night, there is also a little pub/club scene that can satisfy the appetite. One good thing about heading out to Geelong for the night-life is that the drinks are a few dollars cheaper than in Melbourne. Getting more bang for your buck can really come in handy when you might be down on the rocks or even if you just do not want to spend as much. Another good thing about the pub/club scene down in Geelong is that many places stay open until 4/5 AM. This especially comes in handy when taking the train because the first train back into the city leaves around 4:50 AM. So get your drinks (and plenty of water of course) and stay up until the first train. One epic night.
Geelong has much to offer when you want to leave town for a night or maybe even two. It is not far, yet the vibe of the city has such a different appeal than much of Melbourne. It has that country feel of a more laid-back and relaxed environment. So saddle up and take the trip out there for a change of pace. There is much more in the state of Victoria than Melbourne, so get up and get out into the state. Who knows, maybe you will find something that you think is better.
