Clothes in sizes that will fit
A Facebook

I have this memory of visiting a Vietnamese market in Ho Chi Min City.

At the first aisle I was greeted by a shopkeeper holding up a pair of voluminous shorts.

They were much too big for me but conversely as everything was made according to Asian sizes they were probably the only thing in the market that was in my Western size range.

As I traipsed the market, the shorts magically reappeared in each aisle. Finally I worked out was happening. The same pair of shorts were being secreted from one aisle to the next so that I was being met with them at each turn. The shopkeepers were determined I would not leave the market without buying those god damn bulbous shorts.

I guess they still have them and are trying to flog them off at the next plus size westerner.

While an amusing travel anecdote it also highlights a problem. Even in our many wonderful markets in Australia it can sometimes be frustrating poking through racks of size 8-10 clothes.

So it is a fantastic initiative that Melbourne now has a regular A market dedicated to providing plus size women with a positive market experience which offers them heaps of choice.

The market showcase local small businesses, designers and makers who celebrate 'plus size' women.

It also invites women to go through their own wardrobes so that they can sell their pre-loved fashions and accessories. One off stalls are quite okay and cost $40 to hold but clothes must be size 16 or larger.

As well as 'plus sized' fashion there are also crafts stalls, jewellery, soaps, cosmetics and baked goods.

As with a lot of the markets these days there are also lots of extras such as live music, tarot readings and coffee.

The A Market also donates 5% of it's profit to a local women's charity.
