You'll be able to join in the rousing choruses and songs, listen to the speeches, and relive the musical performances evoking the spirit of community and patriotism typical of Australia's fighting spirit in 1914.

Australia's fighting spirit, intense patriotism and overwhelming pride will be on full display when some of Queensland's finest bands, choirs and musicians join forces for a rousing gala concert commemorating the First World War. You will see how Queenslanders supported Australia's young men who had gone off to battle a century ago through a combination of activities at home. This war effort from the home-front included demonstrations of support such as, Empire Day concerts, Red Cross and YMCA fundraising events.
A Patriotic Event revives these gala spectacles for modern day Queenslanders to feel the pride and excitement of 100 years ago.
You'll re-live the
Empire Day concert held in Brisbane's Exhibition Hall in 1916 which featured music representing all the nations of the Empire and her allies and join in singing those old hits, such as,
Men of Harlech,
Rule Britannia,
The Marsellaise and
God Save the King.
It's not all serious patriotic fervour though as
A Patriotic Event also features some of the more humorous songs and recitations, such as
Shakespeare's Henry V, usually performed by ex-soldiers at the All Khaki Concerts conducted by the YMCA later in the war.
You will sing along to wartime favourites including
Keep the Home Fires Burning and
It's A Long Way to Tipperary led by local musicians including the
Brisbane Excelsior Band,
University of Queensland Pipe Band,
Brisbane Celtic Fiddle Club Ensemble as they are joined by local choirs and soloists including, John Thompson
(Cloudstreet, War Horse, The Great War), Nicole Murray, Elspeth Sutherland and triple-golden fiddle award winner, violinist Emma Nixon.
Philip Gearing will also be playing the spectacular
'Father' Henry Willis Pipe Organ which is the largest organ of its kind in the southern hemisphere and considered to be one of the world's best-preserved pipe organs.
A Patriotic Event will recreate the atmosphere, excitement and patriotic fervour of the First World War when the spirit of the times saw Queensland society focussed on providing support to their fighting men. People did this by a large number of concerts, carnivals and events to fundraise for the efforts overseas and to express support for the troops and for all of those affected by the war in Europe.
A Patriotic Event has always been about community, patriotism and, most importantly, people coming together to recreate a spirit of togetherness that defined Australia in the war years. In 1914, Australia was very much a part of the British Empire and, when the Empire called, Australia answered.
Major General Professor John Pearn, Former Surgeon-General of the Australian Army and Military Historian will also provide the
Event with a lively and fact-filled address.
