A Mother’s Milk
Located near
Pickle in the Middle , a Mother’s Milk is where you can enjoy classic cafe-style dishes and a few more unique options. It is quite popular, there was a crowd of a decent size when we visited.
The strips of chicken in the Summer Salad were cooked just right, with the Cajun spices giving them a distinctive spiced taste. Shredded apple in the coleslaw gave it extra crunch and the Asian dressing gave the dish a delectable tangy flavour. Completing the presentation was a scattering of sesame seeds.

Their Portuguese Sardines had enough sardines to make eating the dish a satisfying experience and the sardines did not taste fishy. Capers added extra tang to the dish and the poached eggs had lovely runny yolks. For those who like to add more tang to the dish, a lemon wedge came with the dish.

The homemade napolitana sauce in the Baked Eggs dish had a delectable savoury taste. The texture of the eggs leaned towards firm. We would have preferred them a bit softer. For those concerned about the creaminess of the provolone cheese, it was not too thick. Slices of sourdough toast were served with the dish to soak up the copious amount of sauce.

Their Brownie was a fudgy type typical of American brownies, while still retaining some lightness. The brownie also had some batter including white chocolate swirled into it to provide a change of flavour. Topping the brownie was a thin slab of dark chocolate held by white chocolate ganache.

Their Muffins were of a large size. The Apple Cinamon Muffin was fluffy and light and had the degree of cinnamon flavour we desired. The apple filling did not taste too sweet. The same filling was used to secure the dried apple slice and walnut to the muffin’s top.

Compared to the Apple Cinamon Muffin, the White Chocolate and Mixed Berry Muffin was firmer while still being fluffy. We were glad that the sweetness of the muffin was not too overwhelming and the texture of the berry filling was not gluggy. Topping the muffin was a drizzle of white chocolate, freeze-dried raspberry powder and a disc of white chocolate.

A good option for a hot day, their Cold Brew Coffee had the degree of bitter flavour we expected and enough ice was included to make it ice cold. If you like a hint of citrus flavour, a slice of orange can be included in the drink.

The decor gave the cafe a rustic feel. There are indoor and outdoor seating options for customers. If you are looking for a good place for cafe food at Unley, consider giving A Mother’s Milk a visit.
