It seems as though A Mother's Milk is the talk of the town. "The best coffee in Adelaide!" - everybody keeps saying. This urban-cool cafe certainly has gotten some attention in recent times, so I decided to investigate it myself.

Coffee is something that A Mother's Milk does consistently well. Their experienced baristas display a sound knowledge of the coffee-making process, and are happy to chat to you about different blends and how beans can vary from region to region. You can choose from a variety of single origin grinds or go with their own recommendations. They also have the coolest neon-coloured coffee tampers around. I'm jealous.

The breakfast menu at A Mother's Milk isn't your average morning fare. But it's not too far out either. Certainly don't be expecting your typical bacon-and-eggs-brekky, instead the menu features a range of sweet and savoury dishes that delight first thing in the morning (or, if you're a late riser, they do all-day breakfast too).

Think smashed banana on sour dough toast with ricotta, honey and crumbled pistachios, or baked almond grove eggs with napoletana sauce and parmesan. Looking at the menu, your eyes are drawn to roasted marinated tomatoes, house-made dukkah and avocado, or smoked salmon with dill and capers. Appealing ingredients that are well-executed on this breakfast menu.

The dishes are simple, not too fancy-pants, with great combinations of flavours and textures. The menu is short but sweet - it's focused and knows just what it is. I love a cafe that does a few things really well, instead of trying to be everything for everybody.

The baked eggs were delicious - simple and hearty served with sour dough; toasty warm and perfect for a winter morning. I tried the Tuscan-style white baked beans with crispy prosciutto, served on sour dough and lots of fresh parsley on top. It should be a winning combination, with the creamy comfort of the baked beans, paired with the salty tang of crispy prosciutto. But it didn't blow me away. Perhaps a little more seasoning or an extra texture would have tied it all together.

In fact, for a cafe that feels ever-so-slightly pretentious, the prices are actually quite reasonable with meals varying from $4 - $16. We certainly got our money's worth, with ample servings that were satisfying and tasty.

Lunch is almost better than breakfast - with a range of sandwiches and salads that are as unique as they are delicious. Again, with a limited menu they do a few good dishes really well. Grilled chicken on sour dough with bacon, avocado, rocket and honey mustard was just mouth-watering - fresh, hearty and gorgeous to look at.

Speaking of gorgeous, the Prosciutto, Pear & Blue Cheese salad was a treat as well, if you're into the face-whacking flavour that you get from blue cheese and the unrelenting saltiness of prosciutto. The sticky sweetness from the balsamic glaze dressing and the neutrality of the pear add a nice complexity and balance the salad really well. Its been done a hundred times before, but it's still great.

A Mother's Milk also has a range of freshly-squeezed juices, milkshakes and smoothies that are jam-packed with delicious ingredients like banana, blueberries and soy milk.

The service is great and the staff are always friendly. The atmosphere is pretty happening, with a great vibe and perfect decor. Wooden floors, funky tables, vases with single-stemmed yellow orchids. They describe it as rustic-urban, and they'd be correct. And the bathroom is gorgeous, with nice soap and hand cream supplied. It's these little things that make a cafe experience all the more memorable.

**Breakfast is good, lunch is great, but the coffee is fantastic.

And the best part is that they always, always ask how you're coffee was. I love that kind of service. And I always, always respond "It was amazing!"

I have only one qualm with this place. It's worth saying that the name A Mother's Milk is a little bit of a put-off. Not a huge fan. Fortunately the atmosphere, food and exceptional coffee is redeeming enough to make this cafe a good one.

HINT: Don't forget the sweets. Whoever makes these delicious morsels deserves a high-five. Their home-made Apple Tea Cake, loaded with fresh apple and topped with a mountain of cinnamon and raw sugar - amazing.
