Go on a magical ride on a picnic blanket
This classic complicated love story is brought to life at dusk every Friday, Saturday and Sunday night of November at the Belvedere Ampitheatre in Centennial Parklands.
Helena loves Demetrius, Demetrius loves Hermia, Hermia loves Lysander, add the mischievous Puck to the mix mistaking the Athenians while doing the work of fairy king, Oberon, applying love potion to the wrong eyes and turning an actor's head into that of an ass and you get a comedic, intriguing play which is as relevant today as when Shakespeare wrote it.
Anna Mowry makes a brilliant Helena, passionately in love with Demtrios Sirilas' Demetrius as he pursues Madeline Jones' Hermia into the woods to persuade her to marry him instead of Lysander, played by Andrew Steel.
The Belvedere Amphitheatre is a wonderful place for this kind of theatre, similar to the traditional theatre-in-the-round for which this play was written.
Tama Matheson, along with cast and crew, do a brilliant job of bringing this story to life with a beautifully bare stage, excellent use of flags and lighting to showcase the actors without distraction.
It is a lovely chance to combine a picnic with friends and family with a trip to the theatre. There is parking nearby in Centennial Park to make it an easy walk with picnic gear.
Tickets are available from Moshtix from $25 plus booking fee. Box office opens at 6:00 pm for a 7:30 pm start.
