A hilarious and moving portrait of a 38-year marriage

This October, Galleon Theatre Group (GTG) is excited to present the South Australian premiere of A Love Affair by award-winning American playwright Jerry Mayer. Tickets are now on sale for this strictly limited season.

Jerry Mayer has had an impressive career in television, writing and producing well-loved sitcoms such as Bewitched, M*A*S*H, The Bob Newhart Show and The Mary Tyler Moore Show.

A Love Affair is an award-winning romantic comedy that explores the rollercoaster ride of a 38-year marriage.

Under the direction of Lesley Reed, whose previous GTG production of Incorruptible was the recipient of the Best Comedy Award at the 2018 ATG Theatre Awards, A Love Affair features a stellar ensemble cast including Lindy Le Cornu as Alice (elder), Lindsay Dunn as Jimmy (elder), Shanna Ransley as Alice (younger), Nick Endenberg as Jimmy (younger) and Leanne Robinson as a multitude of characters.

Can financial reversals ruin or even reinforce a marriage? What if you could talk to your younger self or, indeed, talk to your older self, about what's ahead or behind you on the rollercoaster of marriage?

It's the early 1990s and like a lot of people of the time, Alice and Jimmy Diamond have had a downward turn in their finances, forcing them to move into a cramped condo. As they clear out the attic of their Malibu home they relive their marriage of 38 years.

Their younger selves are often present, allowing for poignant, brutally honest and amusing insights into decades of love, pain and laughter... with a sexy sprinkle of spice.

A Love Affair will be performed at the Domain Theatre at Marion Cultural Centre from 20 to 29 October 2022. Choose from 7 performances:

  • Thurs 20, Fri 21, Sat 22 October 2022 @ 7.30pm

  • Thurs 27, Fri 28, Sat 29 October 2022 @ 7.30pm

"Jerry Mayer has gone and done it again (as those of you who saw Almost Perfect and Aspirin & Elephants would expect). Absolutely side-splitting humor. The audience was roaring throughout, and so was I. Jerry Mayer is surely one of the funniest writers alive, and he is in his best form here. The sexual innuendos are witty, the business of aging is handled with great humor and understanding, and the human condition is explored with a fresh eye. This is a marvelous evening in the theater you can't do better!" The Good Life

"Mayer, an old hand at turning a comic phrase, keeps the humor constant, but he has been careful not to sacrifice humanity for hilarity." LA Magazine

"Warm of heart, quick of wit and especially enjoyable!" Daily Variety

"Full of laughter and tears. A Love Affair is just that the story of a marriage with its many peaks and valleys, a subtle statement about the difference between the sexes and the common ground that makes it possible for them to live together in comparative harmony." Culver City News

"Another hit! Chris DeCarlo's direction of this funny comedy is impeccable, adding another success to his long list of credits." The Enterprise

"Steeped in the stuff that makes the world go round and spiced with the laughter that keeps it whirling, it's a memory play with an ardent present and a promising future that speaks to the youth in us as loudly as it does to the well-over-thirtysomething in the rest of us. Expect some afterthoughts, some forethoughts, some insights, some ah-hahs, some tears, but mostly a lot of laughter when the past meets the future in the present in an affair you'll remember." Theatre News
