Set in early 20th-century Sweden,
A Little Night Music is a sumptuous romantic farce that follows the entangled lives of several upper-middle-class couples. Against the enchanting backdrop of a perpetual midsummer twilight, the story unfolds with passion, humour, and a hint of Shakespearean mischief, reminiscent of
A Midsummer Night’s Dream. At its heart is Desiree Armfeldt, a seasoned actress whose complicated love triangle with lawyer Fredrik Egerman and the charismatic Count Carl-Magnus Malcolm – and their respective spouses – leads to a night of revelations and romantic musical chairs.

Premiering on Broadway in 1973,
A Little Night Music earned Sondheim his fourth consecutive Tony Award for Best Musical and Best Score. The show is brimming with some of his most elegant compositions, characterized by waltz-inspired melodies. Classics like
A Weekend in the Country,
The Miller’s Son,
You Must Meet My Wife, and the iconic
Send in the Clowns promise to sweep audiences away on a musical journey unlike any other.

Director Robert Shearer is said to be bringing a fresh vision to this beloved masterpiece. Having corresponded with Sondheim before the composer’s passing in 2021, Shearer will be introducing new interpretations and character insights that delve deeply into the emotional, romantic, and societal underpinnings of the story. This renewed focus breathes life into both the leading and secondary characters, offering a richer and more intricate theatrical experience.
