This exhibition which is on till the 19th March at Heide Museum of Modern Art features paintings from Albert Tucker's career as a Modernist Figurative Painter, spanning from the 1940's in wartime Melbourne through to the 1960's and till the end of his life. I discovered so much more about the life of Albert Tucker by joining the guided tour which is free once you purchase an entry ticket to the exhibition. I highly recommend the guided tour first, before seeing the exhibition.

The works in this collection present key paintings exploring the Australian landscape and portraying human drama, self-portraits and that reflect his modernist influences and his stylistic progress over the years.

His works responded to the world around him and his own life experiences, and they often reflected critically on society. During his career he played an active role in art politics, particularly in the1940s, writing influential articles about the direction of art in Australia.

Albert Tucker arrived back to Melbourne, Australia in the 1960's after living in London and Europe for 13 years. Feeling nostalgic he started painting landscapes of the harsh Australian Outback and myths. In the 1980's he returned back to painting urban themes, as seen in his final paintings around St Kilda, Luna Park.
