A Guy's Guide to Romantic Comedies

This article is for all the boys who have ever been stumped when it comes to movie nights with their girlfriends, wives or just the special women in their life who love romantic comedies. Rom-coms as we like to call them, have the ability to make us (women, mostly) laugh, cry and dream of what a perfect relationship or moment looks like. But I'll be honest and write it down that a lot of these times these films do more detriment then good when it comes to our own relationships. This discussion steps away from the Nicholas Sparks's books of impossible standards of love and emotion. Plus I feel a bit physically sick by how these films don't just tug, but without consent yank at the heart strings. With this article, I hope it can become a discussion board for that clueless guy, who can make their special other half happy with a rom-com and can also stay awake and not leave the room for extended periods of time. This is so you don't get 'notebooked'!
The first film stars Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore and it's called '50 First Dates'. The film is set in Hawaii and follows Sandler meeting an incredible girl at a restaurant and begins to do what he can to convince the girl to give him a go. Barrymore's character is fun-loving, happy, sweet and kind but she has a flaw. An accident has led her to have short-term memory loss which is in the dating scene is a big negative for her. However Sandler everyday, from the first meeting, goes out of his way to prove his feelings for her. This results in a hilarious montage of events for Sandler and all his accomplices in trying to woo the mysterious girl. This movie still has a soft side and can bring out a few tears but overall the comedy, if you've ever seen a Happy Madison production, makes this film a sweet and funny rom-com that you and your partner can both enjoy together.
The second film that may be a good idea is the classic 'Shallow Hal' starring Jack Black and Gwyneth Paltrow. The story revolves around Black and his friend, who although not the 'cream of the crop' in women's eyes, are blinded by beauty to the point that they let the good girls go. In a turn of events Black's character is hypnotised to see the beauty within as the beauty outside, much to his friends distress and confusion. This movie is an absolute classic that reaches out to every girl that beauty is in the eye of the beholder and that it is more important to focus on the inner beauty. If I've scared the guys away, trust me this film is full of comedic scenes and uncomfortable moments that make it more of a comedy than a romantic film.
If neither of these sound good to you, you can also give movies like 'The Heartbreak Kid', 'There's Something about Mary', '10 Things I Hate About You' just to name a few. This article isn't just for the boys tired of soppy movies, but also for the girls who would rather laugh than cry. Please, if you have any ideas for movies that would fit this idea, add in to the comments and happy movie watching!
