You've got to love a Girl's Day Out. A bunch of friends all together in the one location - not just texts, not just calls, not just catching up for a quick coffee - but a whole day of doing everything that we all love to do. The ones that I have personally been to in the past have all related to weddings or the occasional pamper days for special birthdays. They were highlights of my '20's, however these essential girl bonding days start to dwindle as we get older as our personal and professional lives get busier. What I now realise, is this is the perfect time to have a Girl's Day Out - when you really appreciate the time you have to talk, catch up and just relax in style. So where can you do all these decadent things and more in Canberra? Here are some ideas to get you inspired for this weekend - for girls and women of all ages.
Girls just wanna have fun on the Color Run! Source: Facebook
Canberra Color Fun Run is a 5km fun run event held each year at Commonwealth Park to encourage people to exercise and spread some colourful happiness - literally. Start the run with a white T-shirt and each kilometre you get another colour of powder thrown all over you so you are a beautiful shade of rainbow by the end. Finish the day partying to live music on Stage 88 with your fellow besties. This Girl's Day out is an entertaining and enjoyable day to get together and do something for yourselves - whilst having fun at the same time. The Color Run is suitable for all ages - you will see kids, families, girls groups, boys groups and grandparents all covered in colour. (Tip - take a plastic poncho in the car to drive home in!). The Color Run has so far donated more than $1.5 million to charity. See here for the latest details. Opening Night Screenings at local cinemas are a great way to get the girls together for a night out at the flicks. If it is a real chick flick, it can also include goodie bags, champagne and nibbles beforehand. These events are a good excuse for the girls to get together and laugh along to a good movie, before going out for a drink or dessert afterwards to catch up on the goss. See the Events page at each cinema in Canberra for more details - Dendy (City), Palace Electric (City), Hoyts (Woden and Belconnen) and Limelight Cinema's (Tuggeranong) and Events Cinemas (Manuka).

The Canberra Theatremay not scream "Party!", however it does have a great selection of comedy acts that travel through Canberra - guaranteed to give you all a belly laugh and have tears running down your face. The stars of the Comedy Festival come to the theatre, as well as international and local acts that will have you literally rolling in the aisles. At the time of writing, Kitty Flanagan is coming to the Canberra Theatre Centre - perfect for a Girl's Night Out. If you prefer to see live music or stage show, check out the acts performing live on their What's On section of the website and grab some girlfriends along for the show.
The Melbourne Cup is held in November each year and it is the perfect excuse to pull out your favourite dress, glam up with a fascinator and enjoy a Girl's Day Out at the races. Here in Canberra the day is celebrated at a host of bars, restaurants and clubs around the region, however all the action is at Thoroughbred Park in Lyneham. You can watch the race on the big screen, however there will also be live racing to enjoy on the day, Fashions on the Field and plenty of opportunity to enjoy a champers if you choose. See here for more details.
PAMPERING, FOOD & WINE Day Spa's around the city are an enjoyable way to be pampered with a massage, facial or complete body wrap. You will unwind as soon as you hear the tinkling chimes and slip on those soft towelling slippers, that just always feel so good. Check out the menus at Canberra Day Spa, H2O Spa and Endota to name a few. If you would prefer to have all the girls over to your place instead, why not book in a mobile massage or beauty treatment where they come to you. See the websites for Pamper Party Canberra, Abode Mobile Beauty and Mel's Massage to get you started. Winery Toursare another way to have an enjoyable day together tasting the local wines in the region - without having to worry about the transport. Popular with Hens Days, these tours can be enjoyed by any group for any occasion. If you can get enough girls together you could also book your own private tour. Local companies include Canberra Region Premium Tours, Canberra Winery Tours, Vines and Wines and Black Glass Wine Tours.
Restaurantsaround the region are a great way to start a Girl's Day Out with a tasty breakfast in hip surroundings. Book a table at any of the popular restaurant areas around the city - such as the cutting edge NewActon Precinct in Acton, industrially cool Lonsdale Street in Braddon or scenic Kingston Foreshore. If you are after something a little different, why not travel a little further south to Woden and experience Space Kitchen (my personal fav!) for "out of this world" tastes, breakfast art and colourful desserts.
Wherever you decide to do, whatever you decide to go, just enjoy these rare moments out of our busy lives, when we can just be ourselves and relax with friends. It is important to put aside this quality time with the girls to keep these important friendships going into the years to come. We all need our friends, whatever our age, so why not dedicate a whole day to having fun with the gals this weekend. Once you have done it once, I can almost guarantee you will make it a regular event so you can enjoy it all over again...
