My favourite play in high school was by far the A Dolls House by Norwegian writer Henrik Ibsen. I loved the plot which centred on Nora, a middle-class mother of three and wife, who is hiding a huge secret in 19th Century Norway. Her secret concerns a loan she took out to save her husband's life, and a loan she has been paying off in secret ever since. Yet she is treated like a doll by her husband Torvald and kept under control in a gilded cage.

So when I heard that the Canberra Repertory Society was performing the play, I was very excited to go along and see my favourite play actually being performed on stage. The version that the Canberra Repertory Society is playing, is the translation of the 1789 play by English playwright Simon Stephens. It is a modern translation, which stays true to the original play, albeit a few minor changes.

Even with the minor changes, the play is fantastic, particularly Susannah Frith who plays Nora. She delivers a spirited and energetic performance, growing more intense as the play continues. Robert de Fries (Torvald), Saban Berrell (Dr Rank), Alexandra Pelvin (Kristine) and Sam Hannan-Morrow (Kronstadt) all give excellent performances.

The Canberra Repertory Society has done an excellent job and brings the audience into the dollhouse, with scenery that is eerily reflective of a gilded cage!
