Persian Poetry meets modern music at Nexus Cabaret Space
"A desolate voice" is a unique project commissioned by Nexus Multicultural Arts Centre, for its World Music Series.
Award winning poet and visual artist, Elyas Alavi, was born in Afghanistan. As a child he fled to Iran following the intensification of war in his homeland and in late 2007 he was resettled in Australia. He published his first book "I'm a day-dreamer wolf" in 2006 in Iran, followed by "Some Wounds" published in Afghanistan in 2011. Elyas is currently undertaking a Masters by Research (Visual Arts) at the University of South Australia.
Leading Adelaide musicians Derek Pascoe and Chris Martin interpret Elyas Alavi's deeply moving poetry through new music. The brutal truth of war, the pain of loss and the innate humanness of love and hope are the defining themes of this new and exciting cross cultural collaborative project.
What unifies these three artists is a deeply considered and passionate commitment to their craft. While all three come from vastly different cultural backgrounds they are united by their artistic concepts of freedom. Freedom from musical boundaries, freedom from oppression and freedom of expression form the basis of this unique interdisciplinary partnership.
Doors open at 8pm. Tickets are available from the Nexus website, by calling 82124276, or at the door.
