In the inner north-western segment of Melbourne, lies the lesser known suburb of Strathmore. Just 12km from the CBD and with the Windy Hill precinct right around the corner, this quiet part of the city is often overlooked, especially by those less familiar with this part of Melbourne. Among a cluster of small shops you will find the cafe, A Delicious Afare. Run by co-owners Catherine Tyrrell & Narelle Hall, this place has been a local institution since it was established in 1998.

They are most well known for their inventive gourmet sandwiches, and old-style desserts, such as Vanilla Slice and creamed matches just to name a few. This is also one place where you can still buy a milkshake in the old-fashioned metal containers, or a strong coffee if you are in need of a caffeine hit. You can check out their menu here They are also licensed, so be sure to check out their happy hour specials from 5:30pm – 6:30pm where you can score a beer, wine, or champagne for just $3.50.

This place can get a little crowded, but rest assured you can book ahead so you don't miss out. There is also a lovely outside courtyard so if there's no seats inside don't forget to look out there. No matter how busy they are, you will find that the friendly staff are always up for a chat. The great hospitality and reasonable prices will see you come back more than once – and if you do so, don't be surprised if they remember your name.
