Ironic that the name of the show is A Complete Waste of Time, given that it was anything but!
Steve Chang is a self-proclaimed "socially awkward, introverted" individual from LA, who has cleverly used anecdotes from his real-life experiences and put a dark and humorous twist to it.
Giving us a new and refreshed look at life, Chang takes us on a journey - his journey - from travelling to Peru to fall in love with himself with a bit of help from the infamous (and hallucination-inducing) ayahuasca herb, to his gambling adventures in Las Vegas and beyond, to interpreting the different hierarchies of being classed a bi*ch in the employment sector, and to reveling in one of the most bizarre yet eye-opening experiences, the story of which we didn't know we needed to know - his experience of attending a gay conversion camp (for sh*ts and giggles, obviously)!
The epitome of self-deprecating humour, Chang's humour and style of comedy are tongue-in-cheek, with a touch of a reflective attitude, where he not only shares his journey with the audience but also simultaneously deciphers his perspective on the manner based on the response he gets.
For someone who is introverted A.F., he certainly knew how to turn a room around and be a true star on stage. His narrative is simple yet engaging and while he may initially seem cynical or jaded, he still has this zest for life and pursuing anything and everything to make it a little less of a waste of time.
While there are times where American references leave us Australians feeling a little lost and unsure, Chang quickly ropes us back in with an equally (and more recognisable) reference that makes us jump right back on track with him.
Take my word for it - don't be fooled by the name, because this show is ANYTHING but a complete waste of time and you'd seriously be surprised by this unique show of storytelling and comedy.
