A Boss in the Kitchen (Un Boss in Salotto) - Lavazza Italian Film Festival 2014

A Boss in the Kitchen (Un Boss in Salotto) is screening as part of the Italian Film Festival that runs till the 12th October 2014. Most of the films are shown at the Palace Cinemas at various locations, and The Kino in the city.About this movie; The one who wears the pants in this family is definitely Mrs Coso. Carmella or as she likes to be known, Christina is definitely the driving force in this family, making sure everyone is a high achiever and that the whole family appears perfect at all times. Life goes on as per normal for the Coso family until the picture shes been dusting and lighting candles for of her brother comes to life in the form of a knock on the door. Life in Tyrol, Northern Italy is no longer going to be quiet.

Her brother Ciro (Cyrus) has chosen her home as the place to stay while under house arrest for mafia related crimes. This just does not fit into nor sit well with Carmella's model of perfection. She suddenly has to explain to the family the existence of a brother they never knew she still had. Ciro has just as much trouble making sense of and fitting into his sister's life as she does keeping him in the family while not really acknowledging him. However, things change dramatically when the whole town gets wind that Ciro is allegedly involved with a powerful mafia. Everyone starts to treat the family with kid gloves.

I'm not entirely sure how the title 'A Boss in the Kitchen' relates to the movie. Especially when translated from its Italian film title 'Un boss in Salotto', it means 'a boss in the living room' (kitchen is cucina). No matter, it was a warm tale of family and about coming to terms with who you are. Paola Cortellesi gives a great performance as the driven mother, however the rest of her family's roles are firmly secondary to hers. Uncle Ciro's performance for me, could have been meatier at times, instead of him just relying on his huge big eyed clueless look to translate into a satisfactory performance.

It runs for 90 minutes and it's a very watchable film. However as a comedy it fell a bit short for me, though I must admit the 'cat' related scenes had me breaking out in a big grin. If you think of this as a warm family movie with a few laughs, it works completely. I give it a six and a half out of 10. Paola's performance as the matriarch is a10 out of 10 for me.
