"A Bite to Eat" in Chifley is a retro, funky café with city chic. Tucked away in the suburb of Chifley, a suburb of Woden in the South of Canberra, it is a popular Café for couples, friends, families and mothers groups after playing at the park across the road.

With an eclectic mix of couches, 1960's diner tables, mis-matched chairs, exposed brick walls, a variety of pendant lights and retro 1970's wallpaper - this Café has so many things going on you don't know where to look first. It has such a great style, you wish you had it all in your own house.....well, except perhaps the 70's wallpaper.

The menu is equally eclectic. When you look at the creative breakfast menu there is no plain old bacon and eggs here. One menu item for both breakfast and lunch is Pig Pocket - Bean Bag ($8) which consists of a tortilla filled with scrambles eggs, mozarella cheese, and a choice of bacon or house made baked beans.

Our daughter Miss Four and I shared the toasted Banana and Date toast ($7) which we would definitely have again. She also chose the Baby Shake ($2.40) which is a large metal milkshake cup only half full, to prevent spills.

My pot of organic tea (over $4) was a pleasant surprise with real fresh leaf organic tea and my teapot made just over three small cups.

When we have visited this Café it has always been busy due to its great menu and quirky atmosphere.

Although it is kid friendly inside with comfy couches and highchairs, there is no Kids Menu, so we only come when the Breakfast Menu is available (before midday during the week, all day weekends). There is nothing on the Lunch Menu suitable for children except the hot chips, which isn't ideal.

A Bite To Eat Café would be the perfect place to come for lunch with your friends or partner for a lazy lunch. Lunch menu items include slow roast garlic lamb rice salad, grilled fish of the day, rice cake wraps...everything sounds so unusual that you want to give everything a try!

With outside seating in a sunny courtyard, and the inside café taking up two shop spaces, there is a lot of room to get a table, however on weekends it would be best to book.

Unlike other Cafes, this licenced Café is also open until late a few nights a week with a separate dinner and desserts menu. Mouth watering desserts include bourbon macerated sultana steamed pudding with butterscotch sauce and a ginger nougat ice cream.

On Sunday nights they hold "Sunday Best" live music nights, with jazz, indie-folk music, blues and funk and soul - chill out tunes to sit back with a wine and tapas from 5-7pm. Check their website, facebook page or signage outside the shop for details.

A Bite to Eat café is a popular café for a reason - it is fun, comfy, eclectic, has surprising and delicious food and live music.

All this is a great combination for breakfast with the family, lunch catching up with friends or a chilled out dinner and live music with a special someone.

A retro café, that would easily be at home in Melbourne's trendy café strips.
