Have you ever wondered why bats are associated with Halloween?
Long connected with vampires, it is believed that early pictures of witches revealed them worshipping a horned figure (bat's ears?) that sometimes had the wings of a bat. Furthermore, bat blood was an ingredient in their "flying" ointment rubbed on before attending Sabbath.
During their assault on pagan religions, the Christian church became very wary of bats due to this association.
In celebration of Halloween this year the Bat Conservation & Rescue Qld organisation, in conjunction with Indigiscapes, will be presenting an evening of Halloween fun for all the family.
Bat Conservation & Rescue Qld are a volunteer, self-funded organisation who have three major aims:
Rescue and rehabilitate sick bats
Education about bats and their role in the ecosystem
Conservation of bat habitat
So bundle up the family, the fold up chairs and picnic blankets, and come down to the Black Swamp Wetland in Cleveland and meet the local bat colony. There will be lots of fun activities, including a wildlife display, sausage sizzle, and baby bats to see close and personal. For the kiddies, there will be a craft table where they can make masks and bat wings to wear.
The evening commences at 4:30pm and will finish at 7:30pm after watching the bats venture out for their nightly search for food.
Reservations are Essential. Contact Indigiscapes:-

Meet at the Scott Street Park, and ensure that you wear closed in shoes. Also, packing the mossie repellant is a must!
Bats have scored bad press from the media over recent years. Come down to the Black Swamp and learn the positive aspects of these furry -and some say cute- little mammals that share our environment.
Happy Halloween!
