Zatanna Perth’s Leading Magician Fringeworld 2017
Whether or not you are a magic enthusiast or just a plain sceptic, illusion shows are a wonderful form of entertainment even if you are the latter and vow to pick apart any flaws. I fall somewhere in the middle spectrum – not a true convert but I enjoy being wowed and entertained so I jumped at the chance to attend Zatanna's Fringeworld show.
Not knowing what to expect, I attended her 99% Improv Magic & Fun event at Rigby's Bar as part of Fringeworld 2017 (Verandah Bar Rear 221 St Georges Terrace Perth) which was an interesting improv show where audience members got to choose what they wanted to see from a list of topics so no two shows were exactly the same!
Held in a small, cosy environment Zatanna managed to command the stage immediately with her charisma and funny jokes. I was amazed by her mind-reading skills and mentalist acts where she correctly predicted birth dates, projected people's feelings and guessed specific words from book pages. She also included the normal magic tricks with props such as cards, rings and rope so there was a mix of different acts available for everyone depending on what type of magic they preferred.
This is her very first improv show and when I asked her why she decided to do it she said she wanted to do something different and needed a challenge, something out of her comfort zone. She definitely rose to the challenge, with audience gasps and claps after every act especially after her big finale at the end. There was definitely a lot of interactive audience participation in the show with many volunteers up on stage as assistants and Zatanna was very friendly, welcoming every single attendee at the start of the show upon arrival and farewelling them at the end upon leaving.
Zatanna proves that you don't need huge props, stage lighting or lots of assistants if you have the skills to wow and entertain with good old fashion illusion and magical abilities. Her one-woman show was more entertaining than some huge productions I have seen in the past and the audience was a diverse bunch ranging from children to the older crowd; definitely a hit with families and couples on dates seeking something different.
Zatanna doesn't do public events very often so embrace the opportunity and come and support an original local talent. Tickets start from $16 and shows run from Friday the 20th of January to Saturday the 28th of January at 7.30pm. Come earlier at 6.30pm to enjoy a drink and close up magic by either Zatanna or one of her skilled magician friends as a warm-up before the show.
A multi-talented illusionist, French/Italian-born transgender magician and mentalist, Zatanna (or Sylvia Marinai) initially found success performing as a male Jean-Luc, The Cool Conjurer before moving to Perth in 2006.
Zatanna is an experienced magician who has 9 years of professional performing experience with past awards such as WA's Magician of the Year in 2007, 2008 and 2009 and the Fringeworld 2011 Magic Slam Winner.
Zatanna is available for customised themed private shows from private dinners to functions (charged by the hour with a minimum of 1 hour) with events ranging from the Bonjour Perth French Festival, New Years Eve Celebration, Trantastic 2016, Club Med and corporate events.
She can also organise parlour shows which are interactive close-up stage shows for between 8-35 guests where she can bring her theatre backdrop and sound system if needed. Perfect for hen parties or stag nights. If you like psychological illusions, Zatanna can also perform mentalism acts where she will read your mind, predict the future and just blow you away with her mind super powers.
