I was invited to the Lyric Theatre for the opening night of the 9 to 5 the Musical. Starring some of Australia's best, including Soprano Marina Prior, The Voice winner Casey Donovan and Tony-nominated Eddie Perfect, 9 to 5 also boasts music and lyrics by Dolly Parton. It is currently running through to the 2nd of July 2022, but a word to the wise - buy your tickets immediately. The show is nothing short of thigh-slapping fun and selling like hotcakes!"I am so excited that Marina, Casey and Erin will be playing Violet, Judy and Doralee alongside Caroline and Eddie in the Australian cast of 9 to 5," said Dolly Parton. "The response to 9 to 5 from around the world has been incredible so far. I can't wait for everyone down under to have a fun (and funny!) night out at 9 to 5."

Based on a book by Patrica Resnick, the original screenwriter of the 1980 comedy film of the same name, 9 to 5 is a hilarious take on the workplace. Have you ever sat at work feeling unappreciated, overlooked or dealt with discrimination in the workplace? If so, you will relate to the rise-up theme and understand the cheeky/uncouth humour. So prepare to laugh as you follow three strong women with their not-so-cunning plan to overthrow their dictator boss, Mr Hart.

Violet Newstead (Marina Prior ), a Consolidated industry lifer. She could run the company with her eyes closed, but with her boss taking all the credit, that dream seems entirely out of reach. Judy Bernly (Casey Donovan), is a young woman who enters the workplace for the first time after separating from her cheating spouse Dick. Consolidated Industries turns out to be where Judy grows into her own but not before a steep (and humorous) learning curve. Doralee Rhodes (Erin Clare), is a beautiful and fierce woman, quick as a whip but constantly misjudged by her barbie perfect looks. And then there is Roz Keith (Caroline O'Connor), the long-suffering administration assistant, fiercely fixated on her controlling boss, Franklin Hart Jr. (Eddie Perfect). Their love is severely unrequited, but who needs reality with her wild imagination?

Let's start with Eddie Perfect. Perfect kills it as Franklin Hart Jr. He does such a brilliant job that you find yourself not wanting to clap for fear of showing support for Hart's machismo behaviour. However, you instinctively applaud because Perfect's performance is deserving. Next, Marina Prior was as wonderful as I expected her to be. This seasoned professional's vocal gift is legendary.

Erin Clare did a magnificent job of making us love and sympathise with Doralee. Her voice is incredibly glorious, in line with the rest of the cast.

Casey Donovan. I knew the 2004 Australian Idol winner could sing. Donavan has, after all, gone on to do many roles on stage and television since her win. However, until seeing her shine in this role, reaching every corner of the theatre with her incredible voice, I hadn't realised the true extent of her talent. She moved us all while belting 'Get Out and Stay Out' so full of emotion that we felt every word. Not often do we see single performances receive a standing ovation before the show's end.

Finally, I need to mention Caroline O'Connor. What a sneaky little gem! O'Connor, as the love-obsessed Roz, comedically stole the show. She didn't miss a beat leaving us all in absolute stitches. Question: How long can you clap before it starts to get weird?

Completing the cast is the talented Lily Baulderstone, Ana Maria Belo, Zoe Coppinger, Mia Dabkowski-Chandler, Ben Gillespie, Emma Hawthorne, James Haxby, Emma Johns, Jay Johns, Ethan Jones, Antonia Marr, Josh Mulheran, Tom New, Jake O'Brien, Matthew Prime, Jackson Reedman, Jordan Tomljenovic and Jessica Vellucci.

So don't let your 9 to 5 drive you crazy. Buy your tickets now and gather your friends for a fun night out with perhaps a cup or two of ambition!

"Double the fun of the film and what a cast!" – Sydney Morning Herald"The finest escapism you could hope for" – Australian Financial Review"The best musical to hit Australia ever" - Dave Hughes, 2DAY-FM
