8Bits Burger is the brainchild of classically trained chef Shayne McCallum and Alan Sam. It has a nostalgic ode to the neighbourhood fish 'n' chip shop, with the addition of vintage arcade machines and early hip-hop tunes from the owners' youth. Word had been spreading fast in the foodie community about 8Bits burgers. They are known for one of the best burgers in Melbourne and the are now in Sydney!

The Sydney store just opened near Darling Harbour and we were invited to a tasting event to sample 8Bit's famous burgers and other delicious indulgent dishes from the menu.

The owners of 8Bit are big fans of the 80s and their interior decoration is an obvious play on 80s video games and retro pop culture. This is a cool, hip burger joint with free classic arcade games and the atmosphere is perfect for the young and 'young-at-heart' friends to hang out.

8Bit's menu offers some attractive burger selections, sides and drinks. The Sydney store has a large open kitchen where we could see the kitchen staff preparing our massive burger orders.

We had fun gaming and when the burgers arrived, we ceased our competitive nature and obediently settled into our colourful booth. It's truce before burgers!

I ordered an Oreo milkshake and I had one sip of this and it took me to a sugar high surge. It was chocolaty, creamy and sweet ... we should have really got two because we struggled to share this one! Later on, our friend decided to order a salted caramel milkshake and it certainly made her really happy.

Our eyes lit up when we saw these golden potato gems! They were covered in melted cheese sauce with chopped bacon and fresh shallots. They were so moreish - the kind that's stuff-your-face-in good.

These beer battered fries 'should' taste delicious, but for some reason, they came out cold and not crispy at all. As a self-confessed potato addict, I was truly disappointed. Perhaps the kitchen was having an off-day?

We also ordered some chilli cheese fries. The only other thing I must praise 8Bit for was that it didn't skimp on the all-important cheese sauce on the fries. The liquid cheese and the jalapenos chilli beef toppings made this side dish fairly good.

All burgers were packed in cardboard boxes with greaseproof paper. Supposedly it makes them easier to eat.

Our friends ordered the 8Bit Classic - the beef burger with cheese. They could not fault it. Apparently, 8Bit have got it down pat. After all, this beef burger is one of the best Melbourne has to offer!

They also ordered the 1942 Hot Dog with a surprising twist. The grilled bratwurst was served with pickle relish, curry ketchup, mustard mayo, slaw and spring onion. A former MKR contestant was delighted by the flavour combination. A nice original addition to the traditional hot dog.

It was a cold night and I was feeling particularly naughty. So I wanted a cheeseburger - a Double Cheeseburger with oozing melting cheese down the side. The double dragon burger was indeed a mountain of restorative fat and carbs, featuring double beef patty, double cheese, double bacon plus some pickles and lettuce for good measure.

The beef patty was cooked medium rare and smoky. The pickles were crisp. The sauce was compelling. Not too much lettuce. The cheese melted into the meat. A meat lover's burger indeed!

The Crispy Fried Chicken Burger was another crowd favourite. This Golden Axe burger was so good my friend couldn't put it down. The bun was soft and the fried chicken looked crispy. Together with cheese and spicy Sriracha mayo, it was an addictive burger to say the least. The perfect burger for fried chicken lovers.

We also ordered a Fatal Fury Hot Dog to try. The chilli and cheese kransky was topped with cheese sauce, chilli beef, jalapenos and spring onion. It tasted almost identical as the chilli fries and unfortunately, it did not create a buzz for us.

The beer battered crispy onion rings tasted quite average on their own. The batter was quite thick for our liking. However, I think it would be a great topping to add in the burgers! However, we demolished our burgers too quickly to do so. There is always the next time!
