You will often find me in Footscray purchasing avocados for 99 cents per kilo at the market, getting health checks at the medical centre or dining in at one of the many superb Vietnamese restaurants.
Normally you would not find me, nor anyone, at a burger establishment in Footscray, a suburb known for its many African and Asian Restaurants.
That is until an unspecified genius opened up an Americanised burger joint called 8 Bit. Located at 8 Droop St Footscray, the trendy new diner has captured a bit of media attention. In June 2014, 8Bit made it on The Age Good Food Top 10 Burgers in Melbourne list. Incidentally, if you fish through 8 Bits Twitter account, Masterchef judge Gary Mehigan appears as a follower.
8bit has also been attracting quite the crowd. Having turned up on a Sunday night I was surprised to have just missed a line of 10-15 people that were waiting to order. I visited again on a Tuesday night at 10pm and even at this late hour, there were numerous people munching down on what appeared to be delicious juicy burgers. The burgers have a shiny, golden bun and stand upright in small cardboard containers. The concept is genius, as I assume the juices will be caught by the cardboard box and not run down your top.
The first time I visited 8 bit on the incredibly busy Sunday night, I attempted to order the crumbed portobello mushroom burger. Prior to this I overheard the cashier inform my friend that they were out of onion rings. As I pondered getting the burger, I was also told they were out of mushrooms.
Disappointed by this information, I ordered something off the menu, some potato gems with a warm cheese and onion sauce. The topping was luscious, even though the potato gems were clearly a McCains frozen product. The potato gems will set you back $4 for a small and $6 for a large serving. Cheese and bacon fries are $7, and there are other toppings and a range of sauces available.
I want to say I was satisfied, but I wasn't. I was sad. I was perplexed that the kitchen ran out of onions and mushrooms as 8bit is located about 5 metres from Saigon fresh fruit and vegetable market.
I did return on a Tuesday night and ordered the crumbed portobello mushroom burger with great success. The burger was in my hand within 5 minutes of handing over $9.50 for it. I have one word for the Crumbed Portobello mushroom, Cheese, Tomato, Red onion, Green tomato relish, Lettuce and 8BIT sauce on a soft brioche bun, TASTY.
I will return.
