There's a lot of glee involved in rolling on a pair of leg warmers, pulling up a leotard and dancing your guts out to a bit of Prince during Claire Bowman's 80's dance classes.

Claire (aka Miss Clarissa) is a seasoned 80's dance instructor, having conducted the classes since 2011 at Bottoms Up Burlesque and CAE, before finding a new home at Passion Studios, nearby the Queen Vic markets.

Unlike your everyday dance class, participants are encouraged to dress up (sweatbands, glitter and blue eye shadow are de rigueur) and adopt an alternate 80's persona. It's not mandatory, but it's a good bit of escapism - you can relax and express yourself (forgive the Madonna pun).

Claire has a popular, long running Saturday morning class, running in 5 week cycles, which starts with an intense warm-up followed by a new dance routine each week. The moves are totally authentic 80's.

Her new Wednesday night class, called Feel The Burn, is more aerobic based and a guaranteed thigh strengthener ... all particularly timely heading into winter, when the siren song of the couch is strong.

In case you haven't danced in a while (or indeed, at all), be assured that nothing is too serious - the goals are fun and fitness. "Every week we have at least one out loud laugh," Claire smiles. "Everyone is in hysterics about it. The more unco the better. The more ridiculous you feel, the better it is - the 80's were dorky."
