Incy wincy Spider climbing up the spout.

Australia has its fair share of these interesting and sometimes menacing creatures and the Greek Language has a whole word to describe fear of them. More often then not, they are harmless and rather self involved, spinning and planning where to take their next cobweb and where to find the next tasty morsel of fly or insect.

So perhaps they are not everyone's cup of tea, but it is precisely for this reason that those who are not keen can take advantage of this free public lecture and learn the intricacies of spiders first hand, and dispel some of the more negative images that surround them.

It promises to be informative, engaging, visual and occasionally amusing so how can you turn down an invitation like this.

I have looked with complete fascination at the Golden Orb spiders that regularly appear in my garden, with threads so golden and long you can only look on in amazement. Their bodies are sometimes colourful, always long legged and their ability to be held in suspension for most of their life certainly awe inspiring. Ballet routines, artists and writers have all been inspired by them. What about you?

So come along and enjoy the lecture - no booking required.

Garth Coupland will talk to us about the joys of English Spiders.

Garth arrived in Brisbane from England in 2012. He left behind sixty years of exploration and study of European Flora and fauna. Though fascinated by all taxa he was specially interested in British Spiders.

His collection of photographs, illustrations, cartoons and anecdotes became the basis of a talk that toured the speaking circuit for some years.

He describes himself as a travelling preacher, spreading the gospel about Spiders to the ignorant and fearful!

Just prior to emigration he made a short film with the BBC about this interest. Hopefully you may get to see this and have much laughter as we learn some interesting facts when he tells of the species, their lives and his adventures studying them.
