There are many surfing events throughout the year in Western Australia, and too many to list them all, however I have listed the main ones occurring during the first half of the year, and hope this will give you a good guide to choosing which ones you would like to attend!
However for a FULL calendar list, please go to this
site.
1. MARGARET RIVER PRO
The Margaret River Pro forms part of the World Surf League (WSL) World Championship Tour where the top ranked 34 male and top ranked 16 female surfers compete over a 12-day period.
This event is one of eleven WCT events which are held globally, and which occur at iconic destinations such as:
O'ahu Hawaii
Lower Trestles California
Jeffreys Bay South Africa
Teahup'o Tahiti
Termed as "The jewel in the surfing crown", Margaret River is ranked alongside Hawaii as a "big wave" hot spot. There are over 40 strong reef breaks, including Surfer's Point where the world's elite battle it out at the annual Margaret River Pro.
The event, now in its 32nd year, is as a celebration of "sun, surf, food and arts in an extraordinary natural environment"!
The event is also a huge money-earner for the world famous region, and makes about $5.4 million in annual economic impact to the south-west region. It will be held at Surfers Point, Prevelly and here you will be able to watch the best surfers in the world battle it out.
This will be on from 11th April to 27th April, 2018 from 7.30 am to 5.00 pm on 27th April.
2. TAJ SMALL FRIES
Over ten years ago, professional surfer Taj Burrow hosted his first ever signature junior surfing event, the SMALL FRIES at his home town beach at Yallingup. Many of us are familiar with the beaches in this area and they are recognised as being some of the best in the world.
In January 2018, the event will return for the 13th consecutive year - this event has become one of the most anticipated JUNIOR surfing competitions in Australia.
Here, they have had some of the best waves in Surfing WA history, combined with a list of winners including such greats as:
Dean Bowen,
Soli Bailey
Creed McTaggart
Jack Robinson
Kai Hing
Jacob Willcox
Kael Walsh
The Small Fries is possibly a "breeding ground" for future surfing champions.
Surfing WA with principal event partners, Billabong and The City of Busselton will bring the TAJ SMALL FRIES to Yallingup, on the 19th, 20th and 21st January 2018.
Junior surfers have events for 16 and Under, 14 and Under, 12 and Under, as well as 10 and Under divisions in the wave rich Yallingup region.
The 2018 event is set to be the "biggest and best" event yet, so make sure you are there to either compete, or just watch these amazing young people surfing for a title!
CONDITIONS**
There are conditions for these events so please make sure you read all conditions, and costs at this
site.
3. SURF LIFE SAVING NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
The world's biggest surf sports carnival will return to Western Australia after it was announced that Scarborough Beach would be the host of the 2018 Australian Surf Life Saving Championships.
This is the first time that this event will be held in Western Australia since the highly successful Championships held at Scarborough Beach in 2014.
Surf Life Saving Australia President, Graham Ford said "we are delighted to confirm we are headed back to Western Australia. The Aussies is a truly national event and it is fantastic that our athletes, officials and volunteers have the opportunity to experience the incredible conditions and hospitality of the west coast."
He went on to say that the event was brilliant when it was last held in Western Australia and that there was no doubt in his mind that WA will even surpass the high standards that they had at this last event.
This is also a major coup for Western Australia, as last time it attracted almost 8000 visitors who spent over $12 million during the week that the event was on!
Scarborough has also undergone a major redevelopment and is an important tourism area due to it's natural beauty and the range of accommodation available in the area.
4. WOOLWORTHS SURFER GROMS COMPS
This event is presented by WAHU and Woolworths who will partner with Surfing Australia and beach brand Wahu as the naming rights sponsor of the 2017/18 Woolworths Surfer Groms Comps.
This will be a national event and there will be ten events in all, one of which will be held at Trigg Beach.
This event will cater for the mini, mirco groms (U/8) to the big kids alike (U/14) of any level, and is all about providing a fun, but competitive environment. There will also be prizes, giveaways and beach games.
Each entrant will receive a Woolworths Surfer Groms Comp t-shirt for entering, plus a Wahu beach product.
The Perth event will be number 9, and will be held at Trigg on 27th and 28th January, 2018 and you can see more about this event
here.
5. 2018 HIF WA PRO AM SERIES
The Health Insurance Fund of Australia (HIF) Pro Am Series will have Western Australia's best surfers compete in the the two-event series.
This event provides competitors with the opportunity to compete for cash, great prizes, State Surfing Team selection for National Titles in NSW, and most importantly wildcard positions into the trials for the WSL Margaret River Pro.
