5,000 Poppies: Remembering the Anzacs

A wonderful grassroots and homemade memorial is being constructed to mark the centenary of world war one. This is an ambitious project that all can contribute to. Either by way of making your very own poppy or offering funding and sponsorship.



Anzac Centenary
Between 2014 and 2018 Australia will commemorate the Anzac Centenary, marking 100 years since Australia's involvement in the First World War. And in 2015, there will be a large number of activities commemorating 100 years since the Anzac Gallipoli landing.



Poppy Making
5000 Poppies is an exciting collective of people nationwide who are constructing a community tribute of respect and remembrance. The organisers are inviting all crafters across Australia to participate in this meaningful and heartfelt project. It sounds like a terrific way to participate in a nationwide remembrance. Many groups and individuals are already well underway with their poppy making.



A Field of Poppies
The aim is to plant a massive field of handmade poppies in Fed Square Melbourne on Anzac Day 2015 as a stunning visual tribute to Australian servicemen and women for more than a century of service in all wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations. Phillip Johnson, Australia's premiere landscape designer is joining the project to develop the display. The team is gathering over 100,000 poppies from all over Australia and indeed the world for the project. After the Anzac Day, it is hoped to tour the project nationally from 2015 to 2018 with the ultimate aim being to gift the entire project to the Australian War Memorial for all Australians to enjoy.



Crocheted, knitted, felted or sewn poppies
From its association with poppies flowering in the spring of 1915 on the battlefields of Belgium, France and Gallipoli, the poppy has become a symbol of both great loss in war and hope for those left behind. Contributors are asked to hand make one or more poppies. They can be crocheted, knitted, felted or sewn from any materials. Any shade of red can be used and poppies should be no more than 15 cm in diameter. There is no entry fee and contributors are asked to provide their own materials. There is no barrier to involvement and no limit to the amount of poppies that can be submitted. Entrants are welcome to include a dedication with their poppies. Poppy Patterns
Some knit, crochet, felt and fabric patterns are available in the "patterns" section of the blog . These patterns are meant a guide only. Entrants are asked to feel free to experiment with different materials and embellishments to make your poppies unique. That is the heart of crafting. Enjoy the process, but beware … it's addictive.

Dedication for your Poppy**
For those sending in poppies they need to be accompanied by a submission form. If you wish, your dedication will be posted on 5000 Poppies blog to share with others involved in the project. You can also include small dedication on the back of your poppy if you wish.
Due date for poppies to be included in the display is 15 March 2015.
