5 Unexpected Uses for Bicarbonate of Soda
Brushing teeth with bicarbonate of soda is probably one of the oldest and worst-kept beauty secrets. That being said, there's no denying that bicarbonate of soda has its uses outside of the kitchen. Here are a few handy tips for using bicarbonate of soda around the house:

Deodoriser
Rather than buying expensive chemical sprays, why not mix soda with water to get a natural deodoriser which can be used to eliminate odours in ashtrays, dishwashers, coffee machines, bottles, containers and barbecue grills. Simply spray the solution in affected areas, and then sponge off.

When you don't have enough time to give your dog a bath, a sprinkle of soda in your dog's coat will eliminate any odours. Rub the soda into their hair and then brush out thoroughly.

Laundry/Washing
Adding ½ cup of soda to your washing machine load will ensure that clothes come out whiter, brighter and fresher, without the harmful chemicals found in fabric softeners.

To make a more effective washing liquid, add 2 tablespoons of soda to your liquid when cleaning. The soda will make the liquid more effective at cutting through grease.

Beauty
Before bathing, sprinkle some soda liberally into your bath water. When you come out of the bath, your skin will be soft and silky, naturally.

To remove product build-up from your hair, add a tablespoon of soda once a week to your regular shampoo. Rinse thoroughly, and then condition as normal. The soda will help remove the residue from leftover conditioners and styling treatments.

Health
To relieve the discomfort caused by insect bites, rashes and poison ivy, apply soda directly to the infected areas. A paste can also be made by mixing the soda with water, and applying to injuries.

Soda also acts as a good cure for indigestion. Simply mix ½ teaspoon of soda to a glass of warm water and drink.

Kitchen
To restore old plastic containers that have a 'sticky' feeling, sprinkle some soda, and then rinse with warm water. The soda will give it a smooth, clean appearance, making it look almost new.

Soda can also be used to clean fruit. Before consumption, create a paste of 3 parts soda to 1 part water, apply to fruit, and then rinse. The soda will help eliminate any bacteria on the fruit.

Bicarbonate of soda is one of nature's little miracles- at $1.60 for 500g, you can hardly go wrong. Buy yourself a packet today!
