1. Ghosts (2019)
Alison (Charlotte Ritchie of
Call the Midwife and
Siblings) inherits a run-down mansion from a distant relation. She and her husband move in with the aim of renovating the building and turning it into a hotel. When a near-death experience gives Alison the ability to see and hear ghosts she learns that the house is full of them, including a caveman, a scoutmaster, a World War II army captain, a disgraced MP and a lot of plague victims, and they are not keen on having more humans in their home.
This light-hearted comedy was written and performed by many of the same cast as the popular BBC children's series
Horrible Histories. It's reminiscent of Blackadder, blending snippets of history with black comedy. There are two seasons, with the second currently streaming on iView.
2. Hotel Del Luna
Hotel Del Luna is a hotel that comforts the souls of the dead until they are ready to move on to the afterlife. When a living thief stumbles into the hotel, its proprietor, Man-Wol (Lee Ji-eun, the singer also known as IU) strikes a bargain with him. She will let the thief leave alive only if he promises to give her his son once the boy comes of age. Twenty-one years later, Gu Chan-sung (Yeo Jin-goo from
Start Up and the historical drama
Moon Embracing the Sun) must take over as manager of the hotel whether he wants to or not.
Hotel Del Luna is very pretty to look at, with the hotel magically expanding (looking like something out of Harry Potter), sword fights, a magic tree and IU's fabulous outfits. Some of the ghosts are pretty scary looking (in particular the eyeless woman from the first episode), but overall it's more of drama/romance than horror. It's quite a ride, and well worth embracing subtitles if you don't speak Korean.
3.The Haunting of Bly Manor
The Haunting of Bly Manor was created by Mike Flannagan as part of his The Haunting anthology series, which also includes
The Haunting of Hill House. It's very loosely based on the novella
The Turn of the Screw by Henry James and is tense and frightening at times.
It stars Victoria Pedretti (from
You) as Dani, the governess, who has a sweet romance with Jamie, the gardener (Amelia Eve). It also features Kate Siegel (from
Midnight Mass and
The Haunting of Hill House) as the scary former lady of the manor.
4. Bring it on, Ghost (Hey Ghost, Let's Fight) (2016)
Park Bong-pal (Ok Taec-yeon) is a university student who happens to be able to not only see but also beat up ghosts. He earns money part-time scaring ghosts away from places on request. When he is offered a large sum to get rid of a ghost from a girls' high school he meets Kim Hyun-ji (Kim So-hyun), a teenage ghost girl who, to his surprise, is not the target but his client. Kim Hyun-ji believes Bong-pal could be the key to finding out how she died, so she isn't going to let him go any time soon.
Bring It On Ghost does contain violence, but it's often played for laughs. It doesn't have the production quality of
Hotel Del Luna, but it's a fun watch.
5. Spirited
Newly divorced Suzy Darling takes her children and moves into a penthouse flat only to find that her home is already occupied by a ghost. Henry Mallet was an English rock star in the 80s before he took a trip to Australia and disappeared without a trace. Henry's ghost finds that, unlike most living people, Suzy can see him, much to her initial annoyance.
Spirited stars Claudia Karvan (from
The Secret Life of Us and
Farscape) as Suzy and Matt King (from
Peep Show and
Death in Paradise) as Henry. It's similar to
Ghosts, but with more romance and music. There are two seasons, although sadly they are no longer available on iView.
