New York is home to several five-star hotels, but even locals will tell you that when they are ready to "live it up in the City" they choose either the Plaza or the Waldorf-Astoria. Many couples who live in other parts of New York often choose one of these hotels for their honeymoon night, especially if they're catching a plane from one of the two major airports for the remainder of their honeymoon. It gives a special feeling to the start of their new life together.
The Plaza Hotel has always been known for its opulence and dignity, but its recent $450 million transformation has only served to heighten that. Some of the changes do bring the hotel into the 21st century; however, these only serve to enhance the traditional touches that were left intact.
6.5 million was spent restoring The Palm Court, long famous as the place to meet for afternoon tea to its original splendor. Locals who have made it a tradition, or who are starting a tradition of having afternoon tea there will tell you that the restoration has made it even more luxurious.
Kings and presidents, as well as locals looking for a special night away, still stay at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel. There are two sections, the main one and the Tower section. Both offer hotel rooms as well as suites.
No matter which part of the hotel you stay in, or which room or suite, you won't see the same thing when you walk into another room or suite. Each and every room has been decorated entirely different than any other in the entire hotel. It must be fun to see how many different rooms you can stay in, just so you can see how each one is decorated.
This "grand old lady" has also been mentioned in numerous movies and TV shows. Its name was always synonymous with luxury.
