If you love dogs, you're bound to enjoy these movies about man's best friend.

1. Oddball

Maremma dogs are often used to guard chickens against predators. Oddball is a Marema, who just isn't any good at this job, preferring to run off and cause trouble for his owner, Swampy (played by Shane Jacobs). Swampy's daughter, Emily (Sarah Snook) is involved in a research project monitoring the fairy penguins on Middle Island, off the coast of Warrnambool, which is in danger of being shut down as the penguin population dwindles due to foxes. Swampy and his 9-year-old granddaughter, Zoe (Tegan Higginbotham), come up with a plan to secretly bring Oddball over to the island to help guard the penguins at night.

This heartwarming film is based on a true story. It's one the whole family can enjoy, full of funny moments and adorable dogs and penguins.

2. Marley and Me

Based on the bestselling memoir by journalist John Brogan, it is the story of Brogan and his wife adopting and living with the badly behaved but adorable Labrador Retriever, Marley. It stars Owen Wilson and Jennifer Anniston as John and Jenny Grogan.

3.Red Dog

Red Dog is a family film directed by Kriv Stenders. It was based on a book of the same name by Louis de Bernieres, which in turn was loosely based on the real-life adventures of a red cattle dog who travelled Western Australia's Pilbara region in the 1970s. The film stars Luke Ford as a truck driver, Noah Taylor as the publican, Jack Collins and canine actor Koko as Red Dog.

4. The Fox and the Hound

The Fox and the Hound is a largely forgotten Disney classic about an unlikely friendship between a red fox named Tod and a hound named Copper. It's a kid-friendly cartoon for young dog (or fox) lovers.

5. Best in Show

Directed by Christopher Guest (of This is Spinal Tap and Waiting for Guffman), Best in Show is a Mockumentary about a prestigious dog show. It follows five of the entrants as they talk about, groom and show their dogs. It's a very funny film and may be especially so to anyone who has been involved in dog shows themselves. The director also plays one of the characters, bloodhound owner Harlan Pepper.
