Spring has sprung and the warmer weather is beginning to arrive. Birds are chirping, flowers are blossoming, and people are beginning to venture outside, but after all those chilly days and nights rugged up indoors with the winter chill you might be stuck for some unique ways to enjoy spring. So here I present to you my top 5 ideas for spring activities.

1. Gardening

Okay, hear me out. Most people have at one time or another fancied themselves a avid or future gardener or desired a vegetable garden of their very own. For avid gardeners this is the perfect chance to begin your routine pruning, planting, and potting, and an excellent occasion to share the joy and teach others the tricks of the trade. Why not get the children or grandchildren involved, and perhaps give them ownership of a patch of their own? One of my favourite memories as a child is helping with our vegetable patch and nursing my own herb garden with easy to grow mint, rosemary, and parsley. A perfect spring activity.

2. Homemade Lemonade

[ADVERT]The bright splash of yellow, tangy lemons, and sweet sugar makes lemonade a spring classic and with lemons coming into season this is the perfect time to try your own home made lemonade. A great project for the weekend and a special treat for friends and family.

Ingredients:

1 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice
1/2 to 3/4 cup fine sugar
4 cups water
Ice

Directions

Combine all the ingredients except the ice in a large jug, beginning with half a cup of sugar and adding more to taste. Add ice to the final mixture before serving and perhaps a slice of lemon for decoration.

Or these lemonade variations:

  • Add mint to the bottom of a glass and muddle or gently bruise mint with a rolling pin, muddle stick, or back of a spoon to release the mints flavour. Top with prepared lemonade.

  • Add strawberries and gently crush in the same manner as the mint above and top with lemonade.

  • Add a swirl of a good natural raspberry cordial to your prepared lemonade and gently stir to create fabulous pink lemonade.

  • 3. Fruit Salad Creations

Springs arrival heralds an amazing array of fresh fruits to your local grocer or supermarket. This is a wonderful time to try new fruits that you haven't eaten before and take healthy eating to a new level by experimenting with different combinations of fruits to create a dazzling array of fruit salads. I also highly advocate using fruits that's are in season as they are cost effective, nutritional and of course super fresh.

These are some of the great fruits in season for spring:

Enjoy lady William apples, cumquats, grapefruits, lemons, mandarins, blood and Seville, papaya, pineapple, tangelo, mangos, starfruit, and berries like strawberries and blueberries.

    4. Brave Al Fresco Dining

Spring, with its blue skies and gentle sun, is a magnificent time to enjoy one of Melbourne's premier leisure activities – al fresco dining. Picture glorious spring days with cool breezes, sunshine, and laid back lunches, or lengthy coffee catch ups outside in the wonderful spring air along sidewalk cafes and Melbourne's renowned laneways. Alternatively, al fresco dining under moonlight and starry skies is a firm favourite, as well as cocktails on the pavement or sitting in the bay window dining at your favourite restaurant.

Outside dining can also include the joys of a simple picnic. Why not pack a few healthy sandwiches, salads and fruits, perhaps some delicious humus and crudités, and set off for your favourite park?

    5. Kick off your Fitness

Spring is an excellent time to begin your fitness routine or perhaps to kick it into a higher gear! Start out by treating yourself to a pair of new walking or running trainers, as without proper trainers you could be subject to injuries or perhaps even joint pain.

Something as simple as 20-30 minutes walking 3 times a week is a terrific way to get yourself more active and improve your health and fitness. From there you can consider increasing the speed, length or number of times you walk, or perhaps join a gym to include weights training or join an exercise class like the ever popular Zumba, Pilates, dance classes, yoga or your local boot camp, dependent on your current fitness level and goals. Pair your new exercise routine with healthy eating and look forward to a healthier and fitter you.
