It's Summer. Time to pack the towel, bathers and sunscreen and head to the beach. If the idea of lying prostrate on a towel makes you yawn there are plenty activities to keep you entertained.

Sand Sculpting

The 'world's your oyster' when it come to sand sculpting, there are so many options. If you want to build something to be admired by others bring along a plastic spade and bucket to help. Check out the creations sculpted at this years Toytopia Exhibition for inspiration. Other options include digging a channel to the sea or having a timed competition to see who can build the tallest sandcastle.

Tools Required: Hands with the choice of spades and buckets as added extras.

Ping Pong Ball Race

This is a great activity for the family. You just have to remember to take a few ping pong balls to the beach. Use your hands to dig a series of smooth, sloping channels wide enough to take a ping pong ball. Place the ping pong ball at the start of the channel and then race each other by blowing the ball along to the finish line.

Tools Required: Hands and at least 3 ping pong balls.
Rock Pool Watching
Rock pools exposed at low tide offer the chance to see plants and animals you might otherwise miss. Keep an eye out for starfish, unusual shells, anemones and small fish. Please respect the fragile environment of the rock pools by just watching and leaving things as they are. Avoid areas with big breaking waves nearby.

Tools Required: Sandals or thongs and sun protection.

Beach Cricket

Beach cricket is a great game for meeting others. It often prompts complete strangers to come up and ask if they can join in. The rules of beach cricket are often improvised or changed to suit the playing conditions and the group. You need at least two people to play unless you've got a ball crazy dog.

Tools Required: A cricket wicket, three sticks or a boogie board, a bat or piece of wood and a ball.

Beach Walking
There are many benefits of walking along the beach. Not only do you get to see the stunning views, you'll burn 20 to 50 percent more calories than you would walking at the same speed on a hard surface.

Tools Required: Sun protection and a bottle of water.
