Western Australia's great outdoors is conducive to recreational activities. Unfortunately - as with all of life - there's always a few bad eggs ruining these hobbies for the majority by damaging the environment and leaving rubbish everywhere.

The actions of these few people are one of the biggest reasons for increasing restrictions on iconic Australian past-times including camping, fires on the beach, off-roading and fishing. Now however, there's a way to help.

Two groups have spawned through social media to bring about positive change and improve the image of outdoor recreational in the eyes of the general public and politicians who work to remove their rights.

In the Northern suburbs there's 4x4 Pick Up - 4wd'ing Responsibly , a group started up by local shack owners in Wilbinga to organise groups to go out together, have a bit of fun and pick up the rubbish left behind by others.

In the South West a similar group - Wellington Region 4wd Care Group Inc - works to clean up the rubbish left by campers and visitors to one of WA's most picturesque forest regions.

The clean ups are run by local enthusiasts and usually supported by the Department of Parks and Wildlife as well as various 4wd clubs, groups and businesses. Besides helping to keep Australia clean, the gatherings are an opportunity to meet like-minded people while enjoying a great Aussie past-time of 4wding.

In the case of the Northern suburbs events, participants can also get the chance to experience a little bit of the shack life that use to embody the whole northern coast. Now just hanging onto a few settlements such as Wedge Island , the shack lifestyle is a beacon of a time gone by, when life was simpler, and much more respectful.

More than just picking up rubbish, the clean ups also help out charities by hosting raffles and barbeques at the events. To keep updated on the latest clean up times and locations, as well as get info on latest developments in the fight to keep 4wd access open, you can join the respective Facebook pages or 4x4 Fight Back .

4wd clean ups have done what no other institution could - they've made keeping the great outdoors clean fun for all.
