4Seasons - an evening of modern dance, both beautiful and entertaining.

4Seasons, now playing at QPAC, delivers an evening of contemporary dance that will engage, challenge and delight you.

This exciting triple billing stems from a major collaboration between the Hong Kong-based City Contemporary Dance Company (CCDC) and one of Queensland's leading contemporary dance companies - Expressions Dance Company (EDC).

The evening opens with Summer, choreographed by Kristina Chan and performed by CCDC. This is the most challenging performance of the night, pushing the audience to confront the darkness of climate change and the oppressive impact a hot, dry world will have on the human psyche. The simple and dramatic set created an emotional and dark atmosphere, drawing the audience into an apocalyptic world filled with souls struggling to connect and survive. The choreography was strong; precise, eerie and at times aggressive moves, transported the audience to a strange world were time seemed distorted and hope lost - a deep message that was not easy to grasp. However, the precision and talent of the CCDC dancers could not be denied.

Summer then gave way to the Day After Day, choreographed by Dominic Wong and performed by EDC. While summer proved sombre and dark, Day After Day was pure energy and light. This performance was my personal favourite; the physicality, power and passion of the EDC dancers left me smiling and wanting more. Again the choreographer cleverly distorts time in this performance- contrasting the slow, lonely journey of an individual against the frenetic and sensual relationships of a modern, streamlined world. While the set was minimal, clever lighting and costuming helped to highlight both the story and the amazing athleticism of the EDC dancers.

The evening ended with 4Seasons, choreographed by Natalie Weir and performed by both EDC and CCDC. Performed to Vivaldi's The Four Seasons, this performance was energetic and filled with beauty. The performance focuses on the seasons of human relationships: The Spring of youth and new love; the Summer of responsibility and commitment; the Autumn of passion and certainty; and the Winter of deep understanding, companionship and loss. The beautiful duet performances of each season were linked by magical and colourful flurries of modern dance performed by the twenty talented EDC and CCDC dancers. This performance was both the audience favourite and a lovely ending to the evening.

While 4Seasons is a must for lovers of modern dance, I would also recommend it to the uninitiated and the modern dance fence sitters- an evening of talent, beauty and pure athleticism may well convert you.
